So im planning to get my girlfriend lasik surgery in a couple months, but im having some concerns.
I remember a few years back there were people whos vision was completely fucked for life because of it.
Have any of you guys had it/known someone who got fucked by it?

Only bad thing I heard is your eyes can get dry and if you rub them in the recovery period you might need to go back again. If they do it shitty it can make your vision worse too.

Im reading about things like dry eyes and HPPD/aura type symptoms.
Have you experienced any visual disturbances or static after it?

ive only heard of one problem with it.
my fifth grade(maybe 7th, idk) english teacher had to constantly use artificial tears, like ever half hour. for some reason his eyes almost completely stopped producing tears after the surgery
which is weird, because i would think lasik has nothing to do with tear ducts

I don't think I'd do it. I've heard a couple of horror stories about it, and as unlikely as it would be, I wouldn't want to be one of the lucky few. I have exactly that kinda luck. There's also something off putting about a procedure that's sold on sale with coupons like pizza or car tires .
Luckily I don't have to worry about it. I don't need glasses or anything.

i'd never get it just because i dont mind wearing glasses.
i actually feel off without them, like something is wrong. i like the weight on my face, and i think i look better with them
if i really hated glasses i would get it in a heartbeat though, because contacts are even worse

Lasik is a pretty sweet gig for an ophthalmologist. Or did you mean from a patient's perspective?
I heard it's gotten safer and better over the years. But I have perfect vision and no one I really know has ever gotten it.. that I know of.
Is lasik like plastic surgery and makeup; a big lie to fool people into thinking someone has better genes than they really do?

I would recommend it to anyone that is nearsighted and has to wear glasses or contacts. I did mine 20 some years ago and still think it's one of the best decisions that I have ever made. I do require reading glasses (magnifiers) for close things and night vision suffers just a little but I'm 55 and age may have some bearing on that. I think it is a great gift to give someone....so very useful.

Nah. Lasik is a bane to most ophthalmologists. its like cashing out instead of having a lifetime client
its nothing like plastic surgery or makeup either, it fixes your eyes so you can see without contacts or glasses. genes have nothing to do with it

lasik is great if you don't really need glasses. I think most of the people with GOOD results barely needed glasses. The shittier your eyes are the more they have to burn off during the procedure, which puts you at greater risk for side effects.
i had it done, and i have almost every fucking side effect on there stupid side effect list that they put you in a room and do a homework assignment on. I asked my doc the chances of side effects and he told me like 1 in 100,000 typically but my eyes were bad so i was closer to 1 in 10,000
which is bullshit since i got almost every side effect there is.
basically when my eyes get dry ill start to get double vision.
looking at anything with LED lights, i get starburts/big giant lines of light jetting out from the light to pretty much the end of my vision in some cases.
On one of my visits in the waiting room i noticed there were TWO of everything on the ceiling, like the double vision was so fucking bad you couldn't tell it was a double vision, it was 2 identical copys almost
Then there's your night vision, soon as you get your eyes done they put sunglass goggles on you, there's a reason for this besides the obvious. Its because soon as they burn your eyes, you loose a level of brightness that you can see. In otherwords EVERYTHING becomes a shade dimmer. But its hard to notice because they have you wearing sunglasses for 3-7 days straight.
So i went from being able to see fairly well at night, to not being able to see shit in the dark at all. When i go to work on my truck during late night hours, say outside, a light from the garage don't cut it anymore, now i HAVE to have hand lights with me, say even for just popping the hood. I can see the engine, but there's alot of shit i know i would have been able to see that i can't anymore.
Lastly, the most annoying thing, is sensitivity to brightness. It was the hardest one for me to describe. during the doctors visit they have you look at a projection of letters, so there's alot of light around them. Well the problem was i could see the letters, but at the same time i couldn't, it took me forever to understand what was actually happening. Its still hard to explain but it just boils down to light sensitivity, it made it so i could see but couldn't really see what i was looking at. anyways, i also go crosseyed now really easy, for example looking at a thin clothsline hanging does it to me everytime, both eyes focus on a different spot and i can't stop it now.
ive learned to ignore lot of this shit, i have dry eyes too but i just make myself cry a couple times a day, like looking at almond flours testicles really helped.
So bottom line is lasik is really for people who don't need glasses, its funny because its the people with shitty eyes and thick heavy glasses that really need it but those people should really stay away from it. Its made for the people who want it for vanity.
also its alot more expensive than they say on TV, you go in thinking its like $300 an eye, you come out paying $2000 an eye and being told to get some fancy eye drops that cost $200 a month
bottom line is, contact lenses are getting really good, and soon they will have something better than lasik, so id just stay the fuck away from it. Because those future technologys you might not be able to do if you have lasik, lasik removes shit, its alot harder to add shit back.
And ill tell you my main theory on why lasik fails or causes alot of side effects. My theory is, it burns a FLAT surface, when it should be slightly round. Thats why you get starburts n shit because light is hitting a flat surface. Its alot harder to program a lazer to cut thousands of spots at different heights, which is what it would have to do, to do it right

damn, i'm glad i enjoy wearing glasses.
my eyes are shit, but as long as i have glasses, my nightvision is way above average once my eyes adjust to the darkness. at least i think it is, i can always point out stars that others cant see at all
that sucks makaveli. you got dealt a shit hand

I had literally coke bottle glasses my left eye bring the worst. I think is was +6.35 or something like that. I also have astigmatism so I went in a little worried. I had sensitivity to light for a few weeks but it went away. All in I think I paid about 3K including aftercare drops and post care appointments.
No dry eyes, no double vision, great night vision.

Well with the old surgery they only had lenses that gave you either near sighted or far sighted vision and you still needed reading glasses, but they have some new lenses that actually adjust so you don't need reading glasses. I want to get this so bad.

with me they said my eyes were so bad they said id have less chances of side effects/or it was borderline that i could go either way, on what procedure they do.
I ended up going the safer route, which is where they don't create a "flap", they just take that skin off entirely and wait for it to heal over

Lasik technology has come a fucking long way in the past 10-15 years, there are many different techniques.. the risks are extremely small if you go to a reputable place. I'm getting it as soon as I can afford it. I believe most of the problems you heard associated with them were when lasik was still in its infancy. Everyone I know that had it done loves it and they have perfect 20/20 vision now with no major side effects

Best thing ever. I received it years ago and I went from totally dependent on glasses (something like -5.25) to better than 20/20 literally overnight. If you look at the actual, objective data (versus anecdotal stories) the side effect profile is very, very, low and lower than most procedures.

my parents got it done 20 years ago, the technology has almost definitely advanced since then and my mom still has 20/20 and my dad is a little blurry and especially needs reading glasses, but the man is 69 so it's probably not because of lasik.
My vision is -5.00 in both eyes so I've been considering it myself.

problem with the objective data is they hide a bunch of it. I remember during my office checkups after, id report problems and the nurse in the room would start to write shit down, and then the doctor would step in and suddenly she'd stop writting, shit like that.
During the eye checkup part id tell the guy a bunch of shit, he'd write it down, say he'd tell the doc, then the doc comes in and trys his best to ignore all the shit, gloss it over, pretend its nothing.
I remember i could read a piece of paper almost at the tip of my nose, i actually did that a few days before i got it done, then after i did that test again and i lost like 6 inch's, told that to one of the nurses and she acted pissed saying smart shit like how often do you read that close anyway......thats not the point you don't use it just for reading.
anyways my doctor was shit, he'd come in look at my eyes, say some cryptic shit to his nurse, didn't explain a thing to me sitting there unless i specifically asked, like he'd keep finding things in my eyes and reporting i guess the locations of them, i dunno w/e.
but yah i had mine done about 3 years ago , and if you do some research you'll find lots of cases were people got fucked, its just well hidden. I remember the person u pay, we went into her office, lights were out, she was crying or some shit had us wait a long time while she was alone in there. Eventually she tells us she had her eyes done apparently it was "great" somehow i doubt that
