Old Shrooms
    #21918954 - 07/09/15 10:23 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys, I friend gave me these mushrooms.

They are 1 year old, and he says they were properly dried. I have just cut them out of the vacume sealed bag. Which wasn't fully vacume sealed as it had air in it. They are Ecuador's. I tried them last year and they were good.
One looks darker than the others and I see shiny bits in the dust.

How do they look to you?

Thanks :mushroom:

They look fine. If the vaccume seal was still good I'm sure they're ok. The shiny stuff is just a little bit of leftover vermiculite

They tested some dried shrooms they found in an ancient Egyptian Pharoes tomb and they were still found to be active.
As long as they are cracker dry they should be fine, storing the shrooms in a vacutainer is a bad idea, next time, tell him to keep them in a paper bag so any remaining moisture can come out.
The shiny stuff is vermiculite, you can take it off if you want.
Enjoy!

There should be no moisture once they're cracker dry. Placing them in a paper bag only allows them to soak up moisture and go bad.

Nonsense, paper bag is the only logical way to store shrooms, do not spread misinformation if you do not know what you are talking about.
Your shrooms will never go bad once in a paper bag.
They will however degrade if you keep them in an airtight container with even the smallest amount of moisture for extended periods of time.

They will eventually soak up moisture if left out. And don't try to discredit my advice because you've stored mushrooms for a few weeks in a paper bag. I've stored fruits in vaccume sealed bags for over a year with no loss in potency or degradation.

It does actually make sense that the dry mushroom would soak up water over time if not sealed. I have seen it happen with dried herbs when the lid was left half off for a while.

You have to have the dried shrooms in an airtight container if you intend to store long term. This is fact

 kinda ironic to say don't spread misinformation followed by use a paper bag on cracker dry shrooms.

Ya.....What the hell is going on here? Listen to the experienced guys. They will be fine to consume, but may have lost a bit of potency. In the future store them vacuum sealed in an airtight glass container in a cool dark place. Will last for a very very long time.
