Substrate recipe improvement idea * 1
    #21918681 - 07/09/15 09:47 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

A few weeks ago I took a course at the university which was partly about microbiology, at one point in this particular course, we were shown this image:

The three graphs show the same species that are grown on three different substrates. Now the red and pink graph culture show what is known as a lag phase, which has to do with adaptation to the medium. The blue one doesn't have this, the most probable reason for this-> the medium where they come from is the same as the medium used for the blue culture.

That however isn't what I wanted to say. The thing to notice in the image is that the slope of the blue graph is higher than the other two, which means it grows faster. When is asked the professor why this was he said that because yeast extract is being used, which is basically cooked yeast biomass, the micro organism has all the required monomers (such as amino-acids) already in the substrate and doesn't have to assimilate them from scratch.

Now I don't know what other people do with exhausted mycelium biomass, but I usually just throw them out. How about instead I cook the mycelium to destroy the cells into momomers, and add this to the next batch's substrate? Seems brilliant to me, all the right cell components in just the right ratios...or am I missing something here?

Thanks in advance

I think you have your colors mixed up. Otherwise this sounds very interesting. It would make sense that mycelium would contain all the nutrients needed for mycelium! Certainly wouldn't be hard to test and I would be happy to try it if it remains a mystery after others respond.
