Boletus edulis

Habitat: Mixed hardwood + conifer, mature forest. Growing in pine needles and leaf duff but not saprophytic
Gills: Pores. Becoming unattached but otherwise not really sunken around stipe. Yellowish/olive hue
Stem: Stipe long and somewhat broad but not for the pileus size. Much lighter colored than pileus and distinctly reticulate to base, with an almost pinkish hue, maybe brownish-red (see pictures). This color was absent on the pileus.
Cap: Broad, convex. Somewhat pitted but not greatly so. Chocolately brown.
Spore print color: Brown. Sorry I think trying to be more descriptive about the color would be misleading. Hopefully the pictures say what I can't.
Bruising: None.

First one could be b. edulis. The other specimen(s) is/are a different boletus species.

I am reasonably positive that these two mushrooms are identical. I spore printed one and sliced one but otherwise it might just be the lighting or lack thereof that could account for differences. These mushrooms were gregarious, 10-15 together, with only a single T. plumbeoviolaceous growing in the mix.

Also: The grayish color on the 2nd photo, where the mushroom is halved is NOT representative of the color. There is no graying. Bad light/photo (using my cell phone). The pores are solely a yellowish/olive/somewhat brownish tint (from spores??) Color.

Well, in the second specimen, the stem has a reddish hue - unless it's due to color inaccuracy as well. That would make b. edulis unlikely, which certainly can have a tan hue to its stem, but is usually cream. Granted, in the first pic, the stem isn't very well visible so I'll gladly take your word for it that they are the same species, but then my vote would be on something other than b. edulis. It's pretty close though and likely to be just as delicious.

So my post title was supposed to be less confident (Boletus edulis??)
Anyway I'm in the central piedmont in NC and we had our first good flush of boletes. I was working so I missed out on finding some to eat. I've seen maybe between 20-30 distinct species. I'll post some pictures later. I found a few more of what I thought to be the same mushroom I posted about, this evening while walking. I adjusted the contrast to show the, obvious to me, difference in coloration of pileus and stipe.
