COLORADO GATHERING - a stroll in the mountains * 3
    #21917476 - 07/08/15 11:17 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Hello.  I know many of you live in Colorado so I thought I'd throw out a small gathering idea--climb a 14er.  A 14er is a peak between 14,000 and 14,999 feet.  You will need no climbing gear for this--no ropes, trad gear, etc.  Just some good hiking shoes.  I'm sure you know how I love to climb 14ers and I'm still on the mission to get all 54 so thought I'd poll interest.  We would drive to set up camp in the night of some Friday, set up camp, play some games or have a few beers and prepare our gear to summit, sleep, and then summit and return to camp that same day.  Once we return to camp, we would chill and socialize Saturday night and drive back Sunday.  Naturally, we will stop at a brewery at some rural town on Sunday as the ritual.  We will set up camp wherever looks convenient and there may be others around so plan accordingly.  What I mean is that this is not a gathering to go to with the plan to do nothing but a bunch of drugs.  I live in Denver so I would be willing to set up a car pool from there.  Depending on ability, we would do a class 1/2 or class 3.

Class 1      Easy hiking - usually on a good trail.
Class 2 More difficult hiking that may be off-trail. You may also have to put your hands down occasionally to keep your balance.  May include easy snow climbs or hiking on talus/scree.
Class 3 Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands most of the time to hold the terrain or find your route.  This may be caused by a combination of steepness and extreme terrain (large rocks or steep snow). Some Class 3 routes are better done with rope.

If anyone on the trip is a mountaineering newbie, we will be doing a class 1 or 2.  If we end up doing a class 3, there will be no ropes and there is sometimes significant exposure (a nearby cliff) so keep that in mind.  Class 2 is generally a relatively safe scramble with limited exposure.  Class 3 is significantly more difficult so I grouped 1 and 2 into the same category.  To give everyone a chance to summit, if you can't go further because you get tired, we will not be turning back and you will have to turn back on your own.  However, for inclimate weather or an injury in our party, we will all be turning around together.  We must summit by 1pm at the latest so we don't get blasted by lightning on the summit which is why we will be leaving super early from camp -- like 4:30 to 5:00am.  Below is an idea of mountains we could climb.  I'm not really too keen on doing a repeat of a route I've already done so I omitted those.  You can look at the mountains listed, routes, and photos to assess your abilities on 14ers.com.  If you want to suggest a mountain other than the ones listed, feel free to do so.  We could also do some combo peaks in the same day; depends on the abilities of the party.

Do not be afraid of this adventure.  When I moved to Colorado, I was super out of shape and smoking a pack of cigs a day and made it to the top of one of these.  Damn it was a bitch but I made it.  It's really more about mental strength than physical strength.  Unless you are super in shape, you will be tired.  I rest quite often on the way up and go at a moderate pace.  This will not be a race.  It will just be for fun.  That said, self-reliance is essential.  I am not your mom and I am not a mountain guide.  This is a trip for all of us to contribute to a common goal.  Feel free to reply or :pm: me with questions.

If you have interest, please reply with your interest and weekends available to go so we can set a date.

Class 1/2
Pikes Peak
Harvard
Columbia
Tabeguache
Shavano
Belford
Oxford
Missouri
Castle
Humboldt
Lindsey

Class 3
Bierstadt east ridge
Bierstadt > Evans Sawtooth combo
Torreys > Greys Kelso ridge
Quandary west ridge

This sounds really neat.

I trekked up to Mills lake earlier last month from Bear lake and it was harder than I thought it would be, and I wanted to do mount Ida... Though a lot of the path further up was covered in snow and sometimes hard to follow.  If anyone plans on going on the harder treks, do be aware of your skill level, it's easy to overestimate; though its so much better going with a good group that knows what they're doing.

I plan on collecting gear and get into the more advance hikes, I would love to do something like this one day.

You should come man.  You could totally do it.  With enough determination, anything is possible.

How often do you plan on doing these? I'm moving to Colorado next month.. am pretty out of shape though. And my right knee is not the greatest. But I think I could handle a class 1 hike.

From now until the end of the year.  The peak season is July - early September when there is minimal snow.  Fall / winter will be really play it by ear.  I have a lot going on for work at that point in the year.  I plan to be on top of a huge mountain from now until the end of August at least every other weekend.

Here's a picture of my mining claims on Mt Tabeguache above Brown's Lake. I did this hike and up to my claims a week ago from the Brown's Creek trailhead. Antero summit is still blocked with snowbanks. I'll be back up there in a week.

 psyched to see you rallying the masses to expose 'em to some thin air and awesome views man!

I won't be making my way out to CO any time soon, but when I do, I'll definitely let you know and we can hit some peaks buddy.

Hopefully people are into it;

stay safe guys!

i am confident i could do a class 2 - especially living and working between 9,000 and 12500 all the time, though im sure it would be difficult.....i live up in summit but i would be down for all the 1s and .5s for sure - not pikes peak though ive been up there too many times

id have to see about some of the 2s, im not big on cliffs so 3s are basically out of the question without ropes

I didn't climb, but I drove to the top of Pike's Peak when I was a kid. The views up there are unbelievable. With that thin air it truly is BREATHTAKING!!!

How about the weekend of August 7?  How does that work with you guys?

I'm interested if anything goes down at brown's lake or mt tabeguache, antero, or mt white. The air is actually easier for me to breathe at 13,000'. The air feels heavier down here and is hard to get a breath, but up there it's effortless and the air is cleaner too.

Sorry I wasn't more specific.

I am not in the area but a couple states away.

I do plan on being in Colorado specifically Denver in the future,
though until then hopefully you can get to know me a little bit better on site.

This just really peaked my interest and I got excited, I would love to do a group
hike and am looking to hone in skill to hopefully maybe get into some of the more advance territory.

I visited Colorado early June of this year and had a blast in the National Forest.

Thanks for putting this together though, being out there is very invigorating and has a lot to offer.

That's the only weekend that doesn't work for me, I'm at a wedding on Cali.  Could we do the week before or after the 7th?

Do you have a jeep-like vehicle?  I don't think my subi could get to the trailhead of antero.  Same with the Tabeguache west ridge.

the mt tabeguache and shavano trailhead shouldnt be tough....from what i saw online it said most passenger cars could make it on a dry day. but im not sure what level they are, they said something about a traverse i imagine as sketchy

http://www.14ers.com/routemain.php?route=tabe2&peak=Mt.+Shavano+and+Tabeguache+Peak

edit: actually tabeguache is a 1/2 too..forgot to look at your list in the OP

Yeh if its raining the roads could get kind of slick I imagine.

Yeh, I would need to go with people who knew what they were doing and how to get there.  The trail to get to the destination can be sometimes a bit vague.
