ID Request
    #21917082 - 07/08/15 09:17 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Habitat:
Hardwood bottom near hiking trail.

Gills: ranging from smooth to wrinkly looking.

Stem: mostly solid through.

Cap:
smooth, orange-ish in color, convex with inrolled margins.

Spore print color:

Bruising:
n/a

Other information:
pleasant smell, not very mushroomy.

the only two distinctions that our field guide gives to accurately dismiss jack o' lantern are the smell and the spore print. we are waiting on the spore print as we speak. if anyone else has any tips to distinguish the two, please inform us. thanks!

Cantharellus lateritius
smooth chanterelles

edit: to answer your questions jack o lanterns grow in large clusters on dead wood versus chanterelles which grow gregarious and are mycorrhizal. jack o lanterns have real gills, get way larger and stink imo.

Eat em!!!! Once you find a jack-o-lantern and see the difference it's quite obvious.

Try breaking them apart. Notice the way the whole thing is solid (lacking obvious separate stipe and gills) and has a meaty "grain", not too dissimilar from pulling apart carnitas, just a little more firm.

The texture is something that is unmistakable and unique, but doesn't really get mentioned in field guides as a way to ID chanterelles over jacks. IMO texture is the best way to get to know a chanterelle, especially since they come in white, so if you're in certain parts of the PNW you will miss some fine edibles just aiming for orange

haha yeah okay you're right don't jump the gun because someone you don't know on the Internet is sure, but I stand behind my advice on checking out the texture.
