Contamination (cobweb?) or just how it starts?
    #21916817 - 07/08/15 08:28 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Hello everyone,

First time growing attempt and i used the "Simple Cubensis Growing Technique" found on this site. I've seen a lot of photos, but am still not sure since I haven't seen any day by day photos of jars.
I got a spore print that i scrapped off using a knife (that i heated on the fire earlier) into a glass cup of prior boiled water. The glass cup was also put through an hour of pressure cooking whilst being wrapped in foil.
I then used some syringes i purchased from amazon, heating the tip between actions (and cooling off accordingly), to pull, push, and pull water with spores into it.
Then I inserted into the jar holes, after heating up the tip again, and shooting some liquid out to cool it off (sizzle), and put in about 2-3ml in each hole (4 holes per jar)

in total 12 jars, and they have been in my cabinet since.

On the first 3-4 days, I have seen nothing happen. At the end of the 4th/beginning of the 5th, I started seeing white fluff appear on the inside in all of the jars, and on the 7th day, the white fluff is growing (current photo)

As I don't have much (any) experience with this, I was hoping someone could help let me know if this is a contamination (cobweb), or just how cubensis starts? The photos I've seen online seem to show it forming sort of like pasta, or more closely like bunched up bean sprouts. However, I don't know if that's how it will end up, or that's how it starts.

I'd think this was cobweb by its looks, but i've read throughout the forum that cobweb would spread and fill the jars within 48 hours, and very quickly..while whatever this is, it is taking its time.

If this is a contamination, I can think of only 3 places where it could have happened:
syringes came contaminated (they were all wrapped, but I guess i could have pressure cooked them to be sure)
spores came contaminated (i don't even know what could be done. I assume since i got it from a reputable source listed on this page, that i should rule this out)
..and most likely i think
when I was transfering the spores to the glass of water, the glass had to be opened for a time. If there were contaminants in the air, they would have gotten in). Is a glove box the only way to go?

in hindsight i realize the following:

1. I shouldn't have used all jars, and all syringes in one go. (at least I left half of the spore print) If the water in the syringes is contaminated, then i'd just end up wasting a lot of time finding that out.
2. I should have included a control jar(s) that just had the same water and no spores. This way, if the water was contaminated, I'd see the same growth in the control jar.

Anyway, so what do you guys think? Are these contaminated or not? Would waiting longer lead to more definite answers?

It looks like mycelium. I think your good. The long pasta looking myc that you described is and I'm guessing, is probably just really rhizomorphic,"really strong, aggressive myc". The reason you got such big spread out spots like that I think is cause you used so mush spore solution. It's ok it just gives a slightly higher chance of contams entering from the syringe. Most guys split 1-2 ml between all four holes. And IME cobweb is this off white sometimes grey and once you see myc compared to cobweb they look completely different. I think your fine and there doing good.
