SWIM has a few automated monotubs that are about done with their 3rd rye grain flush.  He/she knows that the mycelial floor from which the fruits arose has a fair amount of alkaloids still trapped within it. He/she thought of a few ways to make use of the trash that otherwise would have been thrown away. He/she would also like a few opinions on whether or not these methods would: a) Work at all.  b)Be worth the effort c) Make an effective dose worth taking.

Lets call our leftovers "duff" in place of a probably more technical term.

1. Dry the duff in a desiccant chamber, render to powder, cook into honey at 140 degrees F for 20 min, strain the now low viscosity honey through a cheese cloth (or whatever works)

2. Dry the duff in a desiccant chamber, render to powder, perform a polar/non-polar extraction, use extract for.... idk.. whatever you want

3. Forget trying to do anything with this garbage and throw it out..

Maybe an alcohol extract?

he/she said they tried a simple ethyl alcohol extraction on 7.5g of dried "duff" before.  That rendered enough dark blue(almost black) tar to fill a single cellulose capsule.  He/she doesn't know what the results from that were unfortunately due to the fact the he/she gave it to a friend that has yet to report on the experience.

One important thing to remember is that the mycelium has to be matured for awhile before its worth extracting.

I would say that's debatable. Although I don't have any good data to argue that mycelium that has not been fruited yet has more active chemcials, logic tells me that during fruiting, organic chemicals such as Psilocybin (which is not a nutrient to the mushroom, but maybe a defensive mechanism?), travel from the mycelium to the mushroom as the mycelium supplies it with other real nutrients like water and protiens. Therefore, fresh non-fruited mycelium that has been aged (I do agree with veda_sticks on that one) would be most potent. Everytime I've done a mycelium extraction, its been from fresh, un-fruited mycelium.

Anyone here done any quantitative experiments on this subject? Wanna share?

As for Potency, its pretty powerful if you do it right, but you have to use a lot of mycelium...

Here's a rough estimate for dosage and intensity (from my personal experiments)

1 fully colonized half-pint cake (aged 1 week) = about a Level 1-2 out of 5 trip.

^ Its a pretty rough estimate, but that seems to be what I experience...

>> Anyway, back to the procedure you want to know about.....

Here's how you do a simple Alcohol Extraction (Simply Put)

1) Colonize a substrate 100% (I prefer grains) with P. cubenis mycelium from spores or a G2G transfer.

2) Wait about 1 week after full colonization for the mycelium to "strengthen" its network. This increases the psychoactive potency of the mycelium and makes more of it.

3) Buy 190 proof (95%) or above pure alcohol spirit (I use EverClear(r) for the job) and get a electric blender.

4) Cut up your colonized cake into the blender and pour a nice amount of the 190+ proof alcohol into the blender. Blend mixture to a smooth texture.

5) Now you have to make a double-boiler....Get 2 pots, one that fits inside the other, and one of those metal steamer baskets used for steaming vegi's (Its the ones that fold out like a flower). Put the metal steamer in the bigger pot, then fill the pot about half-way with water. Now, turn on the power on your stove-top to "HI", because you're about to get HI..(just jokin').

6) Now, pour the mycelium/alcohol/substrate blend from the blender into the smaller pot. Now, place other smaller pot inside the large one and let it heat up. Adjust the heat when the mycelium blend starts to form tiny bubbles, around "Med" to just above "Low" usually. The double-boiler is used because alcohol has a low boiling point, and you don't wanna burn or dry-out the mycelium. That would be bad.

7) Gentle stir for like an hour or so (the longer the better), adding alcohol to the mixture when the level gets low. Also, add water to underneath if that gets too low too. While its boiling, get a large bowl (or another pot) and a white t-shirt or *fine-thread* cloth you don't want anymore. This will be used for filtering out the grain/substrate from the now psychedelic alcohol.

9) Here's the tricky part...after your done boiling, while its hot (but not too hot or you'll get burned!), pour the mixture into the bowl/pot with the t-shirt stretched over it. The reason the filtering is done hot is because the alcohol flows better thru the cloth and prevents psilocybin crystals from forming, which form from cooling while your filtering the alcohol. Quickly twist the T-shirt into a ball and ring out the alcohol. Make sure its not right off the grill, or you'll burn your hands. Might be a good idead to wear thick rubber gloves at this stage for safety. Ring and squeeze the T-shirt dry into the pot/bowl. Repeat if there is liquid left in the cooking pot.

10) This is my favorite part...You can either drink it like that (I do not recomend it, since its hard alcohol and you won't be tripping: you'll just be drunk) or you can evaporate the alcohol (solvent). Evaporating is my recomendation.

Evaporating the Alcohol from the Extraction (Optional but Recomended)

1. Funnel the alcohol/actives solution into a wide glass, the more horizontal surface area, the better. Those wide coffee mugs or those fat-ass glasses work great, just make sure its pretty shallow.

2. Find a high-velocity fan and set it up over the glass. I use either a stack of books or tupperware to get the height and angle I want the fan to be. It should face the glass at about a 45 degree angle from over head.

3. Turn on the fan and watch for ripping on the surface of the alcohol in the glass. Move around the fan (pitch, elevation, etc.) until you get the most rippling effect possible.

4. The best part....sit back and watch as the alcohol level goes down. When I first did this, I started to see white crystals form at the bottom of the glass. It was pretty exciting because I knew it was the psilocybin/psilocyin molecules cooling down and forming together into visible "clumps". Also, you will notice white residue on the sides of the glass as it goes down. Thats actives too. Might want to scrape it off at the end of the fan-procedure.

5. Leave fan on until you get to a desired level. I couldn't get mind to just dry crystals, since its part water in the alcohol too. If you don't want *any* alcohol in the final product, give it a sniff test. If it smells like hard alcohol, keep the fan on. If it kinda smells like funky water, you are done evaporating.

And that's it! Simple right? I know it sounds pretty complicated from my step-by-step description, but its not too bad as long as you have several hours of free-time to kill.

Many people suggest aging the mycelium some to allow for a larger yield. It would be wise to dry the material completely before adding the etOH.
