Spray Painting Perlite?
    #2191647 - 12/19/03 10:38 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I was wondering if it would be possible to spray paint the top layer of perlite in a fruiting chamber? Of course it would be left to dry before adding the right ammount of water, but my friend wants to do this to make it far less reflective so his fruits will stop growing down. He thinks doing this wouldn't effect the way moisture is aquired and he thinks that the spray paint when dryed will also be fine. I'm asking if this would work and not damage his cakes in any way and be a nice way to keep bottom reflection to a minimum for better upward growth?

NO  the fumes can't be good for the cakes or you down the road. if you want them to grow upward just give them more light from the top of your growing chamber or rubbie tub or whatever. definitely skip the spray paint.

Alright it was just an idea, but thanks for the info, he'll hold off on the idiocy.. Is there Anything else he could do to darken the perlite layer like cover it with smthing etc? He is already giving it as much light as possible durring it's daily lighting period from the top but they still always seem to start sagging down toward the perlite.

I already said their cakes, and yes it's a clear chamber (for now) but he also is starting to use some solid blue containers.

Spray the container, not the perlite.

"Spray the container, not the perlite."

YEP, its pretty simple, rpetend you ARE the mushrooms in there

and ask yourself were is the light coming from and what % comes from where.

you know that would work and maybe not harm anything, but would there be a point???????
would it actually do anything???
I dont think it would do much.
I think his clear container just needs paining, personally.

Well, here's my take: if you paint the walls of the terrarium dark and don't address the perlite, what you will have are the same results. The light shining from above would reflect off the perlite and the shrooms would still grow towards it. Now, it they were making a b-line to the walls of the chamber, painting the sides may very well resolve the problem.

I am just going by what happens in my buds setup: Clear rubbermade all the way around with lava rock on the bottom. Shrooms have never taken a nose dive.

If the food coloring isn't attrative to your thinking, maybe resting the cakes on larger sheets of foil or dark material will keep them pointed up (with adequate light source)?

Thanks for the good ideas, hes always wondered how in all the pics on the shroomery they always grow straight up and his always go sideways and down.. He always figured it to be the highly reflective perlite.. On his next grow he'll try a solid colored container and see if helps, maybe even a dark food coloring as well.

paint, food coloring, blah, blah - that's all bullshit. solid color rubbie w/ a lg. hole in the top( covered w/ plexi-glass ) and perlite in the bottom w/ adequate light and ventilation will work everytime.

yep

When I grew cakes in an old HIGH LIFE  gumball machine I got shrooms going sideways and UP not down, I also happen to have a fisk tank style fluorescent hanging with coat hangers right near the celling on the side of the wall , hanging the wall before it meets the metal for the heating vent.

But solid fruiting cambers help and a light above should clear up your problems, also angle the light put it higher etc.

Get some geolite, hydroton, or leca, its all the same shit. Its red so I dont think it would reflect as much light as white perlite. Or go get some black lava rocks they are like 3 bucks for a big ass bag. There ya go problem solved have a nice day. Dont forget to send me a fruitbasket to show your many thanks
