From what I have heard about this pope, he seems to be an improvement compared to some previous popes. I don't think liberals think hes trying to secularize the church, but he is trying to bring about changes that seem necessary given the intellectual climate today. I like how he said that atheists can get to heaven.
I still think the church is corrupt, but the pope seems to be on the right side of all the issues (unless you think the liberal intelligentsia is devising these issues as a means to further tax themselves to the benefit of no one).

I think the Pope Rap is fitting for this thread:
-------------------- Don't worry about me, I've got all that I need. And I'm singing my song to the sky You know how it feels, With the breeze of the sun in your eyes. Not minding that time's passing by I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

What about his opposition to condom/contraceptive use to prevent the massive spread of infectious and fatal disease?
Just one example of the disturbing way in which his bronze age philosophy informs his values.

Hes not for premarital sex either! You would have a valid argument there if he told people to keep fucking outside of marriage......but he doesnt. The Church calls for a husband and wife to be the ONLY ones who engage in sex. Thus no birth control under those circumstances is a perfectly reasonable option

Maybe you guys should actually LEARN about the Catholic faith instead of revealing the ignorant shmucks you are surrounding the issue. And feel free to refer to my signature about your beloved Pope Francis. Hes a great guy, with lots of interesting stuff to say.
if we must infiltrate the church so be it, the internet and libraries should do most of the work

Trevor Moore is hilarious, he satires so well
Kitty History and Gays Got Married are my favorites of his recent stuff.

I want to ask honestly. When I watch that video it makes me smile, but I realize some "Facts" put fourth are incorrect, incomplete, or do satire at some horrible things that have happened within the Catholic Church.
But how does it make you feel? I watch that video and I can laugh and yet keep my faith. But do you watch that video and simply use it as an excuse to avoid the Catholic Church?

The pope is now and always will be the public face of the catholic church. He isn't chosen by God, he's chosen by the playmakers in the catholic church, the really big picture guys. I'm not going to share any opinions of the church or of the pope here, just truth.
Whatever opinions, thoughts, or actions we see coming from the pope was pre-planned and pre-determined when they selected him. His thoughts opinions and actions are WHY they selected him.
The catholic church is one of the largest money making organizations in the world. When you look at any company's actions at the highest level the decision making process will be forever determined by their thoughts of what will yield the highest profit. (They may not always make the right decision, that's human error, but the intent will always be $) Example: a company makes the decision to go green which costs a ton of money, not because it's good for the environment but because their experts have calculated an increase in total income netting them more then the cost of the green option.
These facts hold true whether we're talking about a hippie, gay loving, drug snorting pope or a marxist evil crimes-against-humanity pope. If you're looking at the pope and trying to judge him it's about as useful as screaming at the manager of your local Nike store for using child labor to make their products.

You could go all the way with that perspective, and cease to judge anything, if you want
Quote:
Pratitya samutpada is sometimes called the teaching of cause and effect, but that can be misleading, because we usually think of cause and effect as separate entities, with cause always preceding effect, and one cause leading to one effect. According to the teaching of Interdependent Co-Arising, cause and effect co-arise (samutpada) and everything is a result of multiple causes and conditions...
In the sutras, this image is given: "Three cut reeds can stand only by leaning on one another. If you take one away, the other two will fall." For a table to exist, we need wood, a carpenter, time, skillfulness, and many other causes. And each of these causes needs other causes to be. The wood needs the forest, the sunshine, the rain, and so on. The carpenter needs his parents, breakfast, fresh air, and so on. And each of those things, in turn, has to be brought about by other causes and conditions.
If we continue to look in this way, we'll see that nothing has been left out. Everything in the cosmos has come together to bring us this table. Looking deeply at the sunshine, the leaves of the tree, and the clouds, we can see the table. The one can be seen in the all, and the all can be seen in the one. One cause is never enough to bring about an effect. A cause must, at the same time, be an effect, and every effect must also be the cause of something else. Cause and effect inter-are. The idea of first and only cause, something that does not itself need a cause, cannot be applied.
- Thich Nhat Hanh
