Using colonized grain to inoculate:SUCESS!

***If I am talking about something obvious to everyone please let me know...though I have seen very little mention of this as of yet.****
I colonized 2 grain grow bags with syringes. One of them grew mold so I threw it out...the other I decided to use to inoculate my first homemade PINT substrate jars.
For the substrate mix I used 1 part verm, millet, rye and peat moss. Half of the grain I ground up. I didn't presoak any of the grain as recommended because I forgot to but it hasn't seemed to make any difference. I just mixed it all together...added water..and pressure cooked.
I colonized the jars by sprinkling the grain into each jar and shaking them up. It has been about 3 days and the jars are already about 1/4 colonized. I never would have imagined that it would work so quickly but, as I see it, this has to be one of the very best ways to speed up growth when trying to grow bulk. Needless to say, I am very happy with the results and am going to continue experimenting this way.

Aren't colonised grain (so spawn) the standard medium for inoculation? The only thing i find surprising about your act is that you go from bag to jar, instead of the other way around
But maybe i've been locked up for too long in the Gourmet and Medicinal Section...

OP interesting substrate and method but i think going from jars to bags will suprise you even more. Bags do better with bulk and jars are better for spawn. If you want the same spawn ratio simply scale everything and use the appropriate amount of jars per bag of bulk sub.

definitely a better idea but I havn't gotten to the point of even reading up on how to properly make my own bags

I'd go so far as to say most bulk grows use grain to grain transfers. We even have a short had for it. Search G2G and you should find thousands of threads. Glad it worked on your first try!
