BEIJING - Police have arrested a Chinese university professor who allegedly sold "millions of US dollars" worth of psychoactive drugs over the Internet to clients in the US, Britain, Canada and Australia, state media reported Tuesday.
The professor, surnamed Zhang, first learnt about the popularity of such drugs while teaching as a visiting academic in Australia, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
He then started a chemical company in 2005 but had staff manufacture "hundreds of kilograms" of methylone, commonly used as a substitute for MDMA, or ecstasy, the report said.
Between March and November last year, the business sold at least 193 kilograms of the substance to the overseas customers, Xinhua said.
The report did not provide a precise monetary figure, only quoting police as saying that Zhang earned "millions of US dollars" from the sales.
Xinhua dubbed Zhang "China's real-life Walter White" in reference to the fictional high school chemistry teacher and methamphetamine kingpin immortalised in the US hit cable TV series "Breaking Bad".
The report did not identify his university, only describing it as "famous" and in the central city of Wuhan.
Last month, police raided Zhang's lab in the city, where they found 20 kilograms of drugs and arrested eight people.
The report of Zhang's alleged dealings comes after police in May announced the arrest of a former chemistry professor on suspicion of selling a drug recipe to a gang which cooked up synthetic narcotics.
Chinese state media in May cited the government as saying the country has 14 million drug users, about one percent of the population, and their numbers have increased by an annual average of 36 percent in recent years.
Use of synthetic drugs, such as crystal meth and methcathinone, which can induce euphoric highs, are reported to be growing in rural areas of China.

It's really weird that this chinese crackdown seems to be focused on MDMA like drugs. Supposedly, the chinese government cracked down on and/or banned 6-APB, which is almost unheard of in china for an RC. And here, we have methylone being cracked down on. Yet, the other RCs remain untouched.
It makes me wonder why. The only thing I can think is that it's possible that the chinese market has a high demand for MDMA like drugs. This would make sense given the music scene in China. Selling to foreigners is one thing, but I bet the government wants to stamp out domestic use, and if MDMA like drugs are popular in china...
Still, I've heard stimulants are super popular over there, yet there's been no crackdown.

Just like coffee here. No one in China is going to crack down on a substance that has the potential to make your workers more productive or help them work longer hours. Cynical, I know...but I bet it has a basis in their policy-making decisions.

There is no music scene in China, there is no Chinese demand for ecstasy like drugs, all of that methylone was going overseas. The Chinese are cracking down on these chemists because their government has been oblivious to people openly selling illegal drugs on the international market and it awas making their law enforcement and government look like the third world back-wash I'm assuming the firs two posters assume that it is. So they're making a half hearted attempt to catch a couple chemists selling fake molly to European, American and Australian children. The drug problems in China are heroin and a small tiny tiny amount of meth, mostly heroin though.

There is a huge music scene in china. I'm not sure where you got the idea that there wasn't.

If this was true, the crackdown wouldn't be confined to MDMA like drugs. It is confined to MDMA like drugs. Therefore this isn't true.

A couple chemists? You do realize that virtually all RCs in the world are manufactured in China, right? Here is how the big Chinese chemical manufacturing companies survive: they produce legit chems during the day. At night, on the side, they produce RCs in order to survive in a cutthroat market. There are dozens of MDMA like RCs being produced by dozens of manufacturers in China.

According to every member who has been there, China has just as big of a drug problem as anywhere. Further, I happen to know that dissociatives such as Ketamine are huge in China. There have been quite a few arrests over it.
