Excellent finds! yes its pretty normal to find them up there they used to be extremely abundant a few years back. There is lack of woodchip habitat up there these days so its hard to find any.
Used to be able to get literally plastic bags full of golf ball to tennis sized subsecotioides around there from some woodchip gardens.
I wonder if the milder climate up there played a part in earlier seasons successes.
Curious if you found these in woodchip or native habitat? Nice sized fruits too, i figured it would be too dry up there now.

Both species where found in native bush, i figure the tree canopy has been keeping them from drying out. All the woodchip garden's I checked where plagued with inactives.

Nice pics you lucky buggars. I've been looking all over the place this last week and had no luck. It's a bit depressing. I definitely have a shroom hunting addiction now. I've found some slippery jacks, cloudy mushrooms? and others that I think are indicator species.
I've been in native bush, pine plantations and parks.. all over the freakin place. I went biking yesterday. I'm getting super fit. But it is frustrating coming home empty handed.
If I make spore water from last years prints do you think they could produce next year? I've found some brilliant spots for growing

Well done. I am in the Lower North Island, but visit up that way every so often. A few years ago, found some subsecotioides in that area you mention that seemed to have some interesting qualities. They were life changers.

Yes, you can get spores this year to produce fruits next season. A brilliant book is Mycelium Running by Paul Stamets. There is no one more knowledgeable.
If you are not finding fruits, it could be conditions. The other reason may be to stop trying so hard. Relax. Enjoy the journey. I have invariably come across the largest finds when I wasn't looking hard at all. When they are ready to make themselves visible to you, they will.

Thanks Bluing, point taken. I do enjoy myself but I'm impatient and can't see very well. So that's frustrating too. Maybe I need a sniffer dog I shall check out that book.

And it is that impatience that can turn to frustration, and I know exactly what you mean. It is a strange phenomenon that when we are relaxed and open we see them more. When we are tense and impatient, it doesn't work out as well, eyesight notwithstanding. More often than not, they are there, hidden in plain sight, and like the deep psychedelic experience, we find what we need to at the appropriate times.

I'd say so. I just checked a couple patches and they're in full swing right now. I need to go back when it's not so busy.
Midnight mission I think.

I was looking for 'signs' today too. Started getting all mystical. The mushroom gods led me to an earth star. Then I decided to track a goat for a while. Had a weird day.
