Fungus for ailanthus
    #21911761 - 07/07/15 08:42 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Curious if anyone knows of species that perform well in ailanthus, specifically live ones. I have a few on my property, and a boatload at work (I'm a forester, and we can't spray glyphosate) and am tired of their stinky wood and insane seed output. I would like them to die, and fungus would be interesting to try. I can cut down the ones on my property, but it would be interesting if I could slam a few plugs in live ones and cause them to slowly decline.

I know armillaria hits them, but unsure if they need to be in decline first. I only seem to find armillaria once the tree is pretty much kaput, or after canopy closure (dead saplings). Also, has anyone cultivated armillaria?

Does anyone have any ideas?

i think blue oyster would work.  I think my friend said he found some growing off a stump of one.  I should do something at least, if you girdle and inoculate all the large stems you can find.  Then just keep cutting back the shoots for....years?  I guess the hope is that the mycelium invades the root system.

I did recently find a handful of articles on verticillium wilt hitting ailanthus, and armillaria coming in and finishing the job. I'd be curious to try anything however.
