Rust colored mycelium?
    #21911318 - 07/07/15 07:20 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Let me start by saying i dont think its rust from the jar lids but i could be wrong.

Pretty much all my jars myc looks like this. No bad smell.. Havent been spreading fast in fact it has been growing fairly slow. Just want to make sure its healthy.

Same jar one pic with flash other without. Strain is cambodian, MS bought from a sponsor.

Doesn't look good. You can get some odd colored metabolites but not before you have a decent amount of mycelium. Also your jars look off. Is that white rice? Is the ratio of brf/water/vermiculite correct? It looks wet and very white. Could just be the pics I guess.

Edit: wait is that fully colonized? I can't enlarge the 2nd pic on my phone for some reason.

Looks like a light mold or bacteria. If you have a lot I'd just bury that.

No its not fully colonized first signs of mycelium happened a few days ago. I doubt its the moisture i ised a bit less water purposely. For every 2/3 cup verm i put a bit under 1/3 water and one full 1/3 brf. Mixing water and verm first then adding brf.

Intriguing. What is the substrate? I don't see any verm except on top.

Are those pint jars or just regular mouth half pints? I've read that pints are bad for PF Tek because the contams beat the cube myc sometimes.  I have never grown a cake just tubs so I am not too sure.  If my shit ain't beautiful and white it doesn't get spawned though.

I've seen that in a couple of my jars. Both jars were 90-100% colonized and I left them alone for a few days when I noticed it. Within a few days it had taken over half of the jar and when I opened the jars to toss it they smelled a bit funky.

Quick note, maybe unrelated. I only ever ran into this when I used the tall 1/2 Pint jars. As the mycelium colonizes the substrate it seems to shrink quite a bit and it opens up the gap between the lid and the dry vermiculite barrier. I thought perhaps that is what allowed the contams to move in a bit easier. Ever since I started using the wide mouth 1/2 pint jars I haven't had a single contamination.

Word.  Like I said thats just what I've read.  Anything but white though I avoid.  I avoid white too if it looks like puff balls in it :deathstar:

I don't trust them. You can keep them around for awhile since the dry verm layer should keep it contained. However I'd start new projects with a different syringe in the mean time.

If you are somewhere where the temp is decent for cubes and you have time you could always trying pulling some fruits off them outdoors.  I wouldn't spawn anything like that in my work area though.  I already have enough trouble with contams as it is Right now for whatever reason.

Hard to say for sure but it looks off. Should be able to know for sure soon tho. Syringes are not guaranteed to be clean no matter who it came from. Thats why so many prefer agar. Check back in a few days to see what it looks like but that color is sketchy.
