How long does it take for the average person to fall asleep? It routinely takes me atleast 45 min to fall asleep at the very least! Sucks, even if I go to bed tired

Depends on if I've taken my medication or not.

Without it I can lay in bed for hours not moving or anything, just laying there eyes closed body relaxed and won't fall asleep. With it, I'm usually out within 10 minutes. Though it still takes me awhile usually to go from the really shallow sleep where you're woken easily and vaguely aware of your surroundings the whole time to deep sleep.

I try not to keep track. Ignorance is bliss when it comes to sleep. If you srt your alarm, then just assume you slept the whole amount of time from when you last looked at the clock, to when you woke up. If i wake up in the middle of the night i refuse to look at the clock. Did i sleep 45 minutes, or 8 hours? Whats it matter if i feel rested?

I told my doctor that I've been doing this and he said he recommends it to people all the time. I honestly wish i could live my whole life without ever looking at a clock. Imagine how liberating it would be.

Also with kratom, i feel like i could only sleep two hours and feel as rested as 8. It's some good shit.

I dunno about the rest of you but I can tell when I've only slept for 2 hours. There is no tricking my body into feeling fully rested. I don't need a clock to tell you how much sleep I've gotten. Suffering from insomnia for my entire life I've learned to be able to recognize it just based on how shitty I feel.

Idk i have insomnia as well, some days it works, and some it doesn't. Its literally guaranteed to be a lousy day though if i actually know how much i slept, vs how much i tell myself.

Same here. I have wicked insomnia though. Some nights I don't fall asleep at all. I often wake up in the middle of the night for no reason and can't get back to sleep. I tend to read a lot of books instead of sleep.

Is that something to recommend to a doc, or is it a recreational fix?

It's a prescription. Though it's a benzo and you know how doctors are with prescribing those. I went through a lot of meds that didn't work before he'd put me on it. I was on Ambien for awhile but.. lol.. Yeah I had to get off that shit.

I don't really see anything recreational in it and I was a heavy abuser of Xanax. I really like benzos, but this has 0 euphoria. It just makes me sleepy.

You drink it every night, that's your problem.

I'm talking about drinking two beers. I drink alcohol maybe once a month, if that. And it's usually 2-3 beers. It always conks me the fuck out.

I pretty much NEVER wake up in the middle of the night, unless I'm profusely sweating and wake up because the sheets are drenched in sweat and I get all cold and have to flip them.

When I'm out... I am OUT... until I wake up. Pretty much nothing wakes me up.. except for high pitched shrill noises.... I've slept through earthquakes.

Word Ill keep that in mind.  Ive noticed the same for ativan Im on (for a different reason) that any recreational value would take half a bottle, but 2 before sleep lays me out real nice and I dont sleep through the alarm or have a hangover.

I'll see what the doc has to say about what you're taking.

Yeah, I would. But people react differently to medication. It works for me and almost nothing does. Not without some horrible side effect. My only other 2 options are Trazadone which makes me sick as hell, completely stops my sinuses up, and I'll spend the entire day feeling groggy and out of it or Ambien which just makes me crazy and do all kinds of shit I normally wouldn't do.

Spent my whole life with insomnia and am pretty desperate for sleep these days. If you can get by without getting addicted to a benzo I would say do it, but I'd rather be addicted then continue on with the sleep patterns I have normally.

Yeah benzos to sleep is a bad habit to get into... but if it's either that or worse options or no sleep.. benzos sounds like a plan.

I don't think it's supposed to take more than 15 minutes -- and if I'm really tired, it doesn't.

But yeah, I usually play mind games (and by mind games, I mean my inner dialogue doesn't shut the fuck up) which leave me up for at least a half hour.

I used to take stuff to help me sleep - I've tried everything from natural herbs to scheduled drugs - but have found that heavy doses of physical activity is the way to go (at least for me).
Plus, I didn't like feeling dependent on a pill to function properly.

I still only average about 6-7 hours a night, but that's definitely better than the 3-4 I was getting.

No sleep = shit brain (ime). Might as well be on autopilot.

Not so much anymore

I appreciate my sleep a bit more now since I used to abuse meth and regularly stay up for days on end my sleep patterns were all fucked up

It used to take me a long time - but i've gotten alot better these days.

I've got some hints:

- Wax ear plugs (available at pharmacy)
- a Mask (or no light pollution)
- 4-7-8 breathing exercise

I was/am a fitful and light sleeper, always have been. I require the perfect atmosphere to fall asleep in or else will toss and turn while trying to fall asleep.

My ex's mom insisted that i try the wax earplugs and gave me a pair. I was surprised to find that they are super comfortable and warm up inside your ear. Closing off your ears not only blocks out outside distractions but allows you hear/feel your heart beat and it is very relaxing.

I am living in a house with too many windows and insufficient window coverings. Bad news, because i require absolute darkness in order to fall asleep. My mom gave me a purple satin eye mask with a ribbon on it. I am sure I look like a total fruit - but covering my eyes really does help me focus on falling asleep. Even if i don't wear it at night, i'll wake up when the sun comes up and put it on then in order to get another hour of sleep.

The 4-7-8 breathing exercise I just learned about inadvertently through a fitness forum. Here's a video about the technique. Basically you push your tongue on the tissue at the top of your mouth behind your teeth, inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds and exhale for 8. Do 3 repetitions and fall into relaxation. I find myself going through about 6 "reps" and it does slow down the heart and the mind - surprisingly it is very good stuff.

--------------------
GO OUTSIDE.

I actually use regular ear plugs and have a dark shade pulled across my windows, and even sleep with a pillow on my head to.cancel extra light..  But I'll definitely give those breathing techniques a try!

i sleep with a fan on me every night to drown out weird noises and to deal with any sweating. i heard cold temperatures promotes the sleep cycle, or maybe it just helps slow down your body processes, idk.

Think it slows down blood pressure and breathing.

I'm in the same boat. I take 1 mg klonopin for sleep each night. I recently stopped the kpins for about 3 weeks and even after 3 weeks I was getting zero sleep. I didn't go through withdrawals either. Anyway, I'm back on the kpins. I figure that benzo induced sleep is better than no sleep.

I wake up sometimes at 3 am and can't get back to sleep I've tried melatonin, nyquil, and weed but the only 2 things that ever worked consistently for me were 1 I had an old subliminal sleep tape that I would set on auto repeat. 2 I DLed some thunderstorm sounds and ocean wave sounds that I have set to loop. Benzos are the worst habit to get into to sleep. I used to be on them and they are crap. Hard to get off of too, you have to taper or get brain zaps or even seizures.

I found that relaxing for about an hour before bed helps. I don't mean watching tv, I mean relaxing all parts of your body until you are limp. As for drugs, reefer helps but when you use it every night it loses its magic but it does work. Another thing I've been using is glycine, a component of food, an amino acid, cheap and harmless. I buy it by the kilo and take around 10 gm every night. It helps and is good for your health.

Other things that may help are melatonin, valerian root, 5-htp, kava, niacinamide, magnesium, relora, chamomile, anti histamines or a dab of lavender oil on your skin.

Script type stuff that works is Seroquel, mirtazapine, flexeril, Neurontin, some anti depressants, etizolam, and other things I can't think of. But don't use any of those every night. Switch around

When theres thc in the mix i fall asleep quickly after i lie down or i just pass out watching tv or something

If im sober it can take me up to 2 hours and i almost never fall asleep within the first 30 minutes of laying down

My mind is just too active to sleep most of the time. I find that i fall asleep faster if i only think about breathing in and out and focus on only that

If you guys have trouble falling asleep go for a really intense run and I mean really intense as in pouring sweat gasping for breath to the edge type running

But try that and see if it helps you fall asleep

Try glycine, I take 10gm at night and have gotten to sleep every night I've used it. I do vape a little too, to make sure but I've been able to cut back on that. Some people use up to 20 gm a night, its totally non toxic and about 2 cents a gm if you buy it right. I got mine on flea bay.

Never heard of this. Looks like it's an amino acid, do you have any idea about the pharmacology of it or what role it plays in inducing sleep? Really curious because it seems like a natural solution to insomnia like melatonin, but melatonin doesn't really work for me.

My sleep schedule has been pretty turbulent throughout the past few years of my life but lately I've been getting really tired around the same time every night and I'm usually out like a light in like 5 minutes. If something wakes me up in the middle of the night (happens like 90% of nights) then it's kind of a crapshoot if I'll fall back asleep or not. Regardless my insomnia is nowhere near as bad as it used to be. Insomnia is fuckin' brutal. It's very hard to adjust to living on very little sleep.

Melatonin is a hormone, glycine is an amino acid which is totally different and works in different ways. Its not a knock out, but you don't get tolerance or nasty side effects. There is research on using it to prevent a number of diseases.

****************

Glycine is one of the non-essential amino acids and is used to help create muscle tissue and convert glucose into energy. It is also essential to maintaining healthy central nervous and digestive systems, and has recently been shown to provide protection via antioxidants from some types of cancer.

Glycine is used in the body to help construct normal DNA and RNA strands—the genetic material needed for proper cellular function and formation. It helps prevent the breakdown of muscle by boosting the body’s levels of creatine, a compound that helps build muscle mass. High concentrations of  glycine are found not only in the muscles, but in the skin and other connective tissues as well. Almost 1/3 of collagen, which keeps the skin and connective tissue firm and flexible, is composed of glycine. (High amounts of Glycine are also found in gelatin, which is a form of denatured collagen). Without glycine the body would not be able to repair damaged tissues; the skin would become slack as it succumbed to UV rays, oxidation, and free radical damage, and

Depends on what I had in my body that day.

If I was sober, maybe 20 minutes

If I was on stims earlier, maybe 1-2 hours.

If I had a lot of caffeine, can be anywhere from negligible-4 hours.

If I had weed, maybe 3-4 minutes

If I had weed, 5-HTP, and 3mg melatonin I always fall asleep within 2-3 minutes unless I am still peaking on stimulants or a psychedelic.
