black discoloration in top of stems on matured fruits...
    #2191014 - 12/19/03 04:08 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

i'm assuming this is normal and just means that i need to harvest immediately, but i just want to make sure that it's not contamination.  there is no rot or foul smell...it just looks like it had a piece of charcoal or something rubbed on it.
if this is normal then i will immediately harvest and report here with the results.
A HUGE MONSTER THANK-YOU TO THE SHROOMERY COMMUNITY FOR ANSWERING ALL OF MY ANNOYING NEWBIE QUESTIONS

that discoloration is likely the spores that have dropped and have stuck to the moist stem, its harmless, but yes it is time to pick

If you can wipe off the black stuff with your finger, then, yes they are spores...no worries.

If its kind of slimey feeling that is actually stuck or in the mushroom, it is probably a rot of somesort, and that should be cut off before consuming.
