ransackers were after mescaline containing cacti
    #21909564 - 07/07/15 12:43 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

July 7 2015

The garden terraces of Karen Harder's New Plymouth home has been ransacked for its cacti and agave plants.

Suspected hallucinogen-hunters have ransacked a New Plymouth garden of its cacti and agave plants.

On Thursday afternoon, Karen Harder noticed the terraces of her Lynmouth property had been "meticulously" pillaged.

Of the 20-strong succulents Harder cultivated across the two platforms, there were few that were spared, she said.

"There is one that has been completely mutilated but all of the others have been strategically cut.

"They even hacked at the baby ones," she said.

Harder, who grew the outdoor cacti on account of its easy upkeep, believed the scrupulous dissections indicated it was a calculated attack.

"To me it was not somebody who has just gone in for the sake of vandalising. They've taken their time."

Harder, who is unsure as to which breed of cacti she is growing, reported the act to the police and was surprised to hear certain succulents were targeted at times due to its psychoactive properties.

While the agave plant is used to manufacture tequila, several cactus species contain the naturally-occurring psychedelic mescaline.

The compound belongs to the amphetamine family and generates the same effects as the synthetic drugs ecstasy and LSD.

The crown of the cactus consists of disc-shaped buttons which can be cut from the roots and dried. The buttons are generally chewed or soaked in water to produce an intoxicating liquid.

Sergeant Bruce Irvine said although cacti-theft has been known to happen it was, however, not a prevalent issue in the district.

"It does not happen a lot but occasionally it will happen," he said.

"It is possible that if it was the right type of cactus they were trying to get something out of it. People get dumb things in their head or they see something on TV and they think 'oh I might try that',"

National Poisons Centre operations manager Lucy Shieffelbien said the 24-hour emergency phone service had received 24 mescaline related calls in the past 10 years.

However, people typically only phoned the centre if they experienced diffucilties after ingesting the recreational drug, she said.

"It's a bit like drinking alcohol and getting drunk – people don't call us unless they are severely poisoned by alcohol."

Side effects caused by mescaline can include sweating, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness but the main effect is hallucinations.

"If no marked effects or injuries occur in the acute stage of intoxication patients are expected to fully recover. However, there is a risk of flashbacks or spontaneous recurrences of the hallucinations in the future," she said.

Gahhhh, this article was just completely made up the assumption they were after mescaline containing cacti (which they might have been, but it's just a guess) and not just trying to vandalize/piss someone off or something else. Agave isn't psychoactive unless it is fermented into tequila, so I honestly doubt they knew what they were doing.

Plus succulents, are there any mescaline succulents? Aren't those a different category of cacti?

But then the whole article turns to demonizing mescaline. Comparing it to amphetamines and ecstasy. And even saying the calls to the Poison Control were similar to people being alcohol poisoned!

I guess Aldous Huxley was one of the people who "'get dumb things in their head or they see something on TV and they think 'oh I might try that'"

Sounds crazy, they should make a movie about it and cast someone like michael cera as the lead.

We had this massive agave plant that got a worm infection and I don't remember how it came about but we let a group of mexicans come and remove it and they were so fucking happy. We didn't have to even pay them. I guess they were going to make mezcal with it and were pretty delighted to see that our plant was perfect and even had the worms.

This bitches cacti were prob inactive hybrids. A typical noob mistake. I only trust certain peru vendors and other rare us vendors with cuttings.

Mescaline is an amphetamine. Many people say it feels like lsd with a little bit of mdma. So what they said was pretty accurate.

Mescaline isnt an amphetamine. They are both phenethylamines, but amphetamines require a methyl group at the alpha position.

:whathesaid:

I always liked how mescaline and lophororine were related to MDMA molecularly but not amphetamines.

That always made them appeal to me.

But I thought tequila was legal anyway. Why can't tequila like Jose Cuervo make I see stuff like with mescaline to see stuff
