Sandblasting
    #21907772 - 07/06/15 11:21 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

So ive been trying to sandblast, got a syphon one with i think a 30-50lb air compressor good decent size.

Problem is it seems like its only pulling the sand like 20% of the time, and my air compressor is running the entire time.

I think i know why, but i don't know how to fix my problem.  I think whats happening is the compressor is getting hot from running so much, and the air is getting hot, which is causing moisture, which then gets the sand wet and its clogging my line up, i seen water drops spitting out at the air connection.

This must be a common problem, what are you supposed to do to prevent this, or get the sand flowing?  It took me like 30 mintues for one part and its not even done yet.  could have got more done with sand paper:facepalm:

you need a moisture trap/filter for the compressor before it gets to the blaster
tank, you also need to make sure you're using a very fine silica sand

this. compressing and decompressing air traps moisture in you compressor tank. uses. humidity is a factor. you can get a moisture trap at any hardware store. it goes on the compressor right before the hose connection.  you should have one anyway for your other air tools so they don't get fucked up from moisture.

so is this all i need

http://www.fleetfarm.com/detail/tru-flate-compact-air-line-filter/0000000036295

or do i need an air line "dryer"

ive been reading reviews and been seeing very mixed feelings on some of these filters, alot of bad reviews for leaks, or still having moisture, and some exploding:tinfoil:.  The linked one doesn't have reviews but its made in USA at least

there's some tiny ones u put right before your air tool, but ive read about those reducing air flow alot.

thats way too much money tho:sad:  i was thinking like $80 tops and even that seemed expensive, the dam refill cartiage for that thing is like $80, sounds like its those moisture bead things, which means the filter prob needs replace fairly often.

i was screwing around with my sand blaster gun because i read someone had trouble with sand getting through theirs due to a manufactoring defect with a burr or something blocking the hole, so i took mine apart, when i put it back together i wanted to get the tip on real tight because it was blowing sand around the tip.  anyways i torqued the screw to hard and cracked the fucking metal for the screw hole which they had right at the very edge of the metal....

yah im starting to feel that way too, i tried to build a sand blast box out of cardboard, plastic wrap, and packaging tape...........  obviously that failed, mainly because i didn't bother to do the arm holes legit.  but its hard to invest that much time into such a half assed idea

so.....now i plan to build one out of 2x4's, lined with 3/4in drywall......seemed the fasted way, the sand blaster had to be right next to the metal to do anything so im not worryed about the drywall getting hit with sand, if that becomes a problem once i fix my humidity issue then i can just line it with ducktape or something to protect it.  No way im paying $300 for a blast box, the only problem i can think of is the armholes, not sure how well drywall will hold up with how i planned to do those, which was just cutting wood circles and smashing the gloves between them and the drywall.  will work fine the first time i think, but after that the drywall will start falling apart everytime i remove the screwes.

anyways yah gotta build one anyway cuss im trying to fit a lawnmower deck in it and all the ones they sell for $300 prob wouldn't even fit that in it, shits way over priced for what it is.  I could prob build this shit even easier with metal duct shit, seems those heater guys throw that shit together so quick and easy, but i never figuered out where u can buy that stuff at in sheets.  The hardware stores all sell it in tubes and box's n crap preformed, the only sheet metal was welll....sheet metal, but i know somewhere they must sell that duct metal which is different and cheaper and would be perfect for this
