My PC fruiting chamber idea (need expert advice)
    #21907615 - 07/06/15 10:19 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Hello my fellow shroomers, I recently have been researching mushroom cultivation and the various ways to do so and I have formulated a design for a clandestine PC case fruiting chamber.

Here are some pictures of the PC case.

As you can see I have removed everything inside and epoxied the face plate of a CD drive onto the case.

I stumbled upon this guide here; http://gamerchronic.com/build-terrarium-for-80-bucks-or-less/ I plan to create something similar but substitute the large 28L container with something taller that will fit inside the case alongside the humidifying unit.
I plan on inserting two racks into the FC to allow room for cakes.

So! what are your thoughts, opinions and advice? do you see any problems with my concept?

My nerdy side thinks this belongs in a PC gore thread, but I'm amused and kind of interested in seeing what you can do with it. Should make a shotgun fruiting chamber just in case though. :goodluck:

Lol when I read the subject I thought you meant a PC as in Pressure Cooker.

Should work, holds computer fans well lol, FAE won't be a problem but how do you plan to keep subs from drying out?

Cubes could fruit in a toilet. That PC case should work as good as a toilet but lacks the flush feature for easy disposal. I suggest you go with the toilet if stealth is neccesary.

huh? did you not click the link there will be ultrasonic humidification unit inside the case set on a timer and a the cakes will be housed in their own plastic container inside the PC case, it will be a fully enclosed environment.

You could build 6 66 quart sterilite monotubs for 80 bux.

lol nope, I usually ignore offsite links. Well if you want to use that humidifier you have to close the case, then how do you get FAE?
It's not going to be an effective way to grow, but, as a novelty, it looks like it could be a cool operation.

I say try it and post results; I'd like to see a fully automated setup that actually works well.
Pasty is on point though... If you want to grow mushrooms, don't waste your time, just do it right.
But if you want to grow mushrooms out of a PC, I won't try to stop you lol.

Ahahaahaha my point exactly the air pump is left on 24/7 allowing fresh air to push out the old air through a one way valve. This pump also pumps the mist into the FC.

Well I wish you luck. Hopefully you dial it in and pull it off. Many people try this sort of thing,  most produce shitty results. So understand that we are not skeptical without just reason.

Good luck

Yea I kinda got that feeling that people would dismiss the idea or be sceptical of it at the very least. I only need to grow a small amount of shrooms for personal consumption and thought that the case was a novelty idea, plus don't have alot of space in my room.

how would you recommend going about it then (inside the PC case).

I wouldn't use a PC case at all. If space is a concern a mini mono measures smaller than that will. It will be a set and forget chamber that can be spawned with as few as 8-10 cakes. Yield will far exceed what you see with a PMP, but its your call.

Remember stealth and mushrooms rarely work out well.

Buy a 20-30 quart tub. Put 6 1.25" holes in it in the same configuration as a standard mono. Bucket tek or sterilize up some coir/verm and crumble and mix the colonized cakes in with 3-4 quarts of the coir/verm. Tape holes and wait till colonized. Then untape the holes, stuff with poly, direct light on a 12/12 schedule and come back to a harvest in 2-3 weeks.

Reseach damion5050 elementary coir tek, pf tek, dialing in monotubs, and have a look a the mini monotub link in my sig. Easy.

Thanks for the advice, mono tubs seemed quite daunting as I thought they where predominantly used for bulk grows and thought that there would be more room for error for someone like me.

This is bulk growing.  Just using cakes instead of grain. Its not hard.

What is conspicuous about a tote or 5 gal pail? You could even do one of those under the bed totes with a shallow substrate and casing.

But if your stuck on the PC idea, just put high and low polyfill vents on the back side and do a small monotub. You should get good yields especially if you do some poo/straw/coir. Automation of that type is better for greenhouses and larger grows. Vent holes and a spray bottle would be much easier to manage and save headache. Ultrasonics can go overboard on RH fast unless there hooked to a humidistat, i can see your PC turning into a fog spewing nightmare. I use two ultrasonics to boost my humidity in a 36 cu/ft greenhouse, one fogger in a unit that small would only need seconds to hit 100% RH.

Well looks like I got some researching to do, I may try doing something with this PC case in future when I am more a more experienced grower just for fun! Thanks for the guidance.

If you need to go stealth, I think your PC idea is worth a go. You will never really know unless you try it.

So true!

Its not very discrete with all the modifications now is it?

Take your jars, birth and dunk, replace the cakes back into the jars and case them with 50/50 mixture of peat/verm. Restrict light on the sides and bottom of the jars and place them inside a plastic bag with at least 4 holes punched in it. Place these bags with the prepared jars into the computer case and proceed to run the fans, the bags will help with contams and humidity and by restricting light to the top of the jar the mushies grow almost straight up and are easier to print it also prevents in vitro pins. The only problem i can foresee is the inside of the computer being too dark or the mushrooms growing too tall and pushing against the bag. I always use a 1gal bag per 1/2pint, short jar to give them plenty of room to stretch.

I do mine this way in a box or drawer to be honest its not even to be discrete, i just find it convenient
