PH of Substrate, Casing Importance; Use of Calcium Carbonate
    #21905836 - 07/06/15 03:57 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

When I was last into this hobby people were all hot on getting the PH into the 8'ish range and supplementing big time with calcium carbonate but I don't see this in a lot of recent posts.

Is ph no longer considered so important to prevent contams? Is calcium carbonate not the wonder supplement for ph and calcium?

Of course, I see gypsum is still the goto for a ph buffer.

A lot of people still use hydrated lime. Gypsum is mainly used not as a ph buffer, but rather to help the developement of fruitbodies.

people used to talk about carbonate both in subs and casing layers
but I havent heard much talk of it in yrs.

AFAIK carbonate doesnt do much, in agriculture they say it takes 1-2 yrs before the carbonate starts breaking down and seeping into the soil..

calc. sulphate (gypsum) is still very much used, but not in 5-10% so much anymore, more like a handful pr brick of coir.

calc. hydroxide (hydrated lime) is used to adjust pH in things like coffee and peat casing layers.
