Peyote Turning Black
#21905753 - 07/06/15 03:36 PM (8 years, 6 months ago) |

I am quite positive my peyote has a bacterial infection. It is in a pot with 2 other Peyotes, and half of it has turned brownish black. The skin is starting to sag off.
Can it be saved? What should I do?
All of my peyote got sunburned from too much sun exposure, so I brought them inside, and this is what happened. >.<

Actually, it's just one side of it. I'm considering cutting off the rotted part. It's really sad, because it's about 4-5 years old, and a really nice cactus
I also thought it might be a good idea to pull it out of the dirt and let it dry for a week or two...

tick tock. Time is of the essence. I recently lost a ten year specimen to rot. Cut that baby already or lose it all.

Damn, I'm really sorry man, that's very sad. I'm trying to decide how to cut it. If I should cut it off to the root, or if I should just cut off the infected part.

Usually, one cuts away any rotting flesh, until you see nice clean green, then encourage a good callous to form. If you have to take away so much flesh as to no longer leave the growing point, what remains could then yet re-pup.

Thank you. I am curious though. I have pulled it out of the soil, and it is sitting on a shelf to dry. Is there any way it could survive without cutting it? It's not like dark black, it's more like brown, but the skin is starting to sag. (It is rot, no question)
The rot has not made it to the center, it's more around the outter edge of roughly 1/3 of the cactus.

Your cactus will die if you do not cut the rot away. Do as you will, waiting that extra day probably doomed it anyway.

I rubbed it in some mycorrhizal innoculant powder. It's a combo of several species of trichoderma and mycorrhizal bacteria. I'm hoping they fend off the bacterial infection, but if it worsens, I'll go to work. I'm doing this for SCIENCE!

I should have taken a pic before I rolled it in mycorrhizal powder. Now it just looks black all over. I could rinse it off though, but I'm worried about adding moisture.
I'm curious, has anyone ever seen a peyote recover from rot?

if you menaged to save it with that mycorrhizal powder, that would have been an unexpected and intresting happening. Sometimes in desperate cases people go for the areole graft, but that happens mainly when you need to save some important genetics or something. I don't think this is the case.
Anyhow, at this point, if you think it's gone, just try, you have nothing to lose. Cut like a deranged surgeon, and see if you can get a piece of loph with roots and no rot tissue.

the one I lost lives on as 5 other cacti. I was able to save some of the rooted portions by cutting them quickly. Also, I grafted some of the smaller heads that were further from the rot. Unfortunately the rot killed the largest head. So yea, I have ten year old genetics, but they are all the size of one year seedlings.

I have only just started growing cacti, so I am not familiar with grafting and all of that
I am kindof scared to graft it to a trichocereus and harm that cacti too!
I have a flowhood though, so sterility is at least achievable.

I actually should have a Pereskiopsis next week! Though I think it was recently cut, and it may need time to recover >.<

Plant it as soon as you get it. It will root with an open cut and in moist soil. Pereskiopsis is the exception.

It won't need too much recovery time. Plant that sucker and it'll be rooted and growing before you know it!

Thanks for all of the advice fellas, I really appreciate it. If I can manage to graft even a small bit of tissue from this Peyote to a Pereskiopsis, I may see pups in time, and salvage the situation. Also, if I lop the root off and plant it, might I see some pups from that too?

Pereskiopsis doesen't need recovery at all. Callousing is something not required and frresh cuts can be sticked into drenched dirt immediately

I know I'm throwing a lot of questions out, but I have two more quick ones. How long does pereskiopsis take to root, and how often (generally) does it kick out pups? I have a lot of grafting projects I'd like to give a go!

If what you have are terminal cuttings they will resume growth and it will take some time for them to pup (or throw out branches, because that's a more realistic description). If you wish to multiply quickly you can try to top a cutting once it grows three inches or so. Plant the cut part and the bottom will throw out multiple pups, which you can cut and plant separately, etc. Repeat the process until you're satisfied with the number of plants you've got. From then on, every time you graft something to a cutting you can plant the cut part separately and end up with the graft AND a cutting to graft to (furthermore, the probability of the stock sending out more pups before the scion gets going is pretty high. Just let them grow to an inch or so and you'll have even more cuttings).
Pereskiopsis cuttings take a couple of weeks to root in fair weather and once topped will throw out pups in a week or two. The rate of growth will depend on a lot of things, of course.

and by the way, i have personal experience of rooting pieces of 1 cm. every time there is an offshot growing from a grafted stock, or when i just remove a fine tip before grafting, i jus stick the piece into dirt. and it roots.

Ive also rooted tiny nubs on peres. I bury them a little and let thrm send up a new shoot. So far my best peres is growing in between 3 cflz. They are lkke one inch from the leaves. Its tall and thick. Also has a graf on a lower section that is fattening nice.

Nicely done man. Any grafting tips? I've never done it before, but I will be soon. I have some Saguaro seeds that I'll be starting soon, and a bunch of trichocerus, and soon peyote seeds!

Trust myself? I don't know that i do lol... I have some whacky ideas! I've considered grafting 3 rooted pereskipsis to the side of one rooted trichocereus to give it 4 times the root mass...

Nothing wrong with experimentation, I say. Hey it might not work, but that's half the fun just saying you tried it. Can you imagine the first person to try to graft a cacti? 'Hey let's chop the head off this one and put it on this one'...

I know. The modern world is the product of such mavericks! ;-)
I would like to have a Saguaro grown on it's own roots, so if I could just graft a rooted pereskiopsis to the side of a Saguaro seedling, it might have the benefit of the Pereskiopsis roots, and the benefits of having it's own!
