Pope Francis opens the church door for the big bang and evolution theories. 1

This is a giant leap forward for catholicism and with it the world, as 1 billion people are catholics.
I applaud his courageous effort to reconcile Christianity and Science.
I subscribe to what hes saying here, even though I'm not a catholic, the image of God as an underlying principle that creates out of love is something I endorse.
One more step in the right direction.

Here you have religion going another step ahead of what science hasn't yet discovered and claiming that this unknown is god.
Lightnings used to be god. The sun used to be god Diseases used to be god Anything science hadn't yet discovered used to be god.
Now the Big Bang is god. Simply because we haven't discovered how it happened yet...
At least it's a huge step forward for the Church to admit that science is right

Wouldn't accepting evolution open Catholics up to the idea that their religion was evolved and thus, by nature, no more or less valid than any other religion?
I think atheists have grasped and can easily convey that many peoples, like Darwin's finches, evolved many variations of religions relative to cultural values. I mean, you can see geographic patterns and cultural variance affecting beliefs, just like language can be affected by these things.
Plus, you have so much more ammo with individual cases; in Ethiopia, where most are Muslim and don't eat pork, there is also the Ethiopian Church of Christ, which is the other major religion there. Missionaries came and brought Christianity, but the Ethiopian church decided to observe the Laviticus passage and still don't eat pork (because it was the best way for their muslim culture to adapt the new religion from these strange resource providers.)
Once Catholics make that leap, it's so easy to see the patterns that undermine their beliefs altogether. Perhaps even religious belief altogether.

What is wrong with you people....did you not hear the last remark in the video?
THE POPES REMARKS WERE IN LINE WITH CATHOLIC TEACHINGS OVER THE LAST FEW DECADES....he didnt open the door to anything.
Quit acting like he is revolutionizing the Catholic Church or something All he is doing is voicing what the Church has already stated.

Ya, You'd have to believe in something like god to think you could predict what happened that far back in time. The laws of physics we know didn't exist yet, so our inductive reasoning about what happened back then can't confidently be based on what's happened in our history. Those kind of predictions require a lot of blind speculation, which puts them pretty near the realm of religion.

If you've ever done even the slightest amount of work on the sabbath, you're just as guilty as gay people.
A sin is a sin, and no one has not sinned by the bibles definition, why are you placing being gay over any other sin that is acceptable by society.
Don't be upset that your religion is evolving but your beliefs on it arent.

Do you think that in this day in age the Catholic church's membership was at an all time low, so they thought up a way to build up membership again by "reforming" some of their more backwards views?
All organized religion is a political hierarchy based on the distribution of dogma and exploitarion of basic human fears.
The pope is more like the "president" of the Vatican , he is more of a politician than a holy man.

There are lots of big bang type theories that have some support, and they're better than that lame "god just did it" explanation. The trouble is that they're trying to piece together what happened from observation alone. With most of physics you can build repeatable experiments to tease out details in a more reliable way.

As for why, yes, we cant say, and I think that the explaination that "for no reason at all all of existance just exploded out of nothing" takes a leap of faith equal to that of any religious claims to accept.
But because of the cosmic microwave background radiation we have confirmation that the big bang occored, or at least that at one point the universe was at a finite point, thus explaining the uniformity of the radiation.
We also know by light spectrum (red shift is moving away from us blue shift is moving towards us; doppler effect) that everything in the universe is moving away from us, the universe is expanding, and if we "rewind" this expantion it again comes to a finite point.
So the evidence presented by the cosmic microwave background radiation as well as the expantion of the universe confirmed by light spectrum (doppler effect; red shift of the galaxy's confirm they are moving away from us and that the universe is expanding) all confirm that at one point the universe was at a point smaller than an atom, and we can keep rewinding until we reach a singularity, so we know that the universe was microscopic (and at a singulairity before this) and has been expanding to its currant size and is still expanding, all these things suggest that the big bang occored....
As for why, who the hell knows, and I guess there is no confirmation that all of existance exploded from nothing for no reason, it only confirms that the universe was incredibly small and has been expanding ever since....

Sounds like they want attention, organized religion as a whole is slowley becoming obsolete, with the Internet and the spread of information its hard to maintain a cult following for archaic institutions such as the Catholic church. So in an attempt to maintain relevance and keep people talking and thinking about them, they get a new pope who has been instructed to make these statements and seemingly he is changing the church.
Sounds like people are fed up with having hypocritical preachers pontificating dogma based on the exegesis of the religious experiance, people these days want to have the religious experiance, and you don't need an organized religion to connect to God. You don't need a political hierarchy or a physical building to connect to Christ or your God of choice, its a scam, that's why they ask you for money, and people are more aware than ever that organized religion is a scam, which has caused the church to resort to its currant plots.
-E. Borodin
. well...
...just the fact they we are talking about the pope and the Catholic church speaks to the effectiveness of the ploy, they will keep making statements that seem to be correcting their backwards views gaining media attention and in turn the publics attention and in some respect I'm sure this new pope and his "reform" of the church has brought a rise in numbers

I got the impression that there are less christians, especially catholics now. It's seems clear that there is a big number of athiests/spiritualists in the new generations also from christian families
Also this talk about declining numbers of catholic church members. I don't know

http://www.gallup.com/poll/1690/religion.aspx look specifically at the second chart. You could say Christianity is declining, but you are dealing with percentages of an increasing population. Still, there is a much larger increase of non-believers over the last couple decades. There are a couple more organizations out there that capture these statistics (including Christian biased ones) and they all find generally the same thing. This is one of the best organized of those sources, however.

Lightnings used to be god. The sun used to be god Diseases used to be god Anything science hadn't yet discovered used to be god.
Now the Big Bang is god. Simply because we haven't discovered how it happened yet...
At least it's a huge step forward for the Church to admit that science is right
The Big Bang was invented by the Catholics.
It's amazing how few people realize that the Big Bang theory originated from a member of the clergy. The Catholic Church has agreed with this stuff for decades but people are acting like Pope Francis making a statement about it is big news.
-------------------- "I have no way of knowing whether you, who eventually will read this record, like stories or not. If you do not, no doubt you have turned these pages without attention. I confess that I love them. Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."
