Middle to upper middle class I'd say. Considering my family is large and my parents had to take care of 4 kids. We all had plenty growing up. I could get new clothes and shoes when I wanted or needed. I never really asked for much.. I do remember my mom refusing to buy me this gokart once that was like only 300$.. She was so against it that I finally saved up like 3/4 of the money. She was mainly against it because she didn't want me to get ran over or ticketed driving it around. If that was anything else she would have likely bought it. If you think about how much kids actually cost it's a fucking shit ton. I remember reading that to raise a kid from birth to 18 it costs like a million dollars. Now add in them helping with college student loans..shit..lol

Rich but my dad went full retard with his money. He spent millions on clothes and art...2 things that become absolutely worthless the second you buy them.

I didn't really reap the benefits of growing up with a rich parent. I got a car at 16 and went on a few vacations, but obviously he was the one with millions in his bank account.

He loved the power of having money. Other kids with rich dad's would get $20 a day or have some money in their pocket. I'd have to wait until he was around and beg (well, ask) for $5 to go to McDonald's. God forbid he give me $50 a week for spending and food money. No, I have to come beg like a dog for $5 to go eat fast food.

Anyways, he was such a moron with his millions he ended up slowly going broke over the course of 15 or so years. He had maybe 1.2 million in a trust fund that dwindling down to about 600K during the start of the Great Recession. He yanked it out and started investing money into scams. For example, he gave some dude on Craigslist $60,000 to be a ¨business partner" in some nursing home with the promise of getting $6,000 a month income. Such a retard. The guy he gave the money to drove a beat up van. Robbed blind.

He thought the scams that go to your email were real and invested thousands in everything that came to him.

He should have easily had $10 million just by doing some basic low risk investments like Microsoft, McDonald's, Walmart, etc.

But ya, he spent a huge chunk of his millions on clothes.

It's irritating to think about because I should be riding his coattails and be a millionaire trust fund baby right now, but because he was such a fool...

He was a podiatrist (foot doctor) and probably made around 300 thousand or so a year, and that was in the 80s and 90s...

He was also a spoiled brat only child and while he was rich he convinced his parents that he was poor and robbed them blind too. They saved up a lot of money and after he was down to a couple hundred K he'd pull them into the scams too. He easily dwindled them out of 300 to 400,000 over the course of 5 or so years. They gave him money voluntarily but it was basically a con game he was playing with them. It's pretty disgusting.

Damn man, that's sad as hell. You could be sitting on a beach in the South Pacific, drinking umbrella drinks & toking some killer weed everyday, all day...having a trust fund.
I'd be pissed at the old man, but I'm probably older than him. I grew up in the 1950s/60s & started off middle-class. My dad invented something & became rich. He was smart with his $$$.

My best friend's dad made probably upwards of millions selling real estate before the crash. He was legit ballin. He had his face and ads on several grocery store carts and you would just randomly see him it was funny cause I knew him well. He would always take us on vacations and pay for everything. My parents would feel bad and ask if I should pay and he refused. Granted we watched him almost all the time while his dad did his shenanigans.

He had a nice ass boat. 3 jaguars. and a million dollar house. Then the housing market crashed and he had a hard time. It was crazy seeing him sell his boat and shit. He still has the million dollar house and 2 jaguars but that was after some wrangling. He isn't stupid and is still a good business man. He actually still sells homes but no where near what he was before 2008.. Must suck ass being up and up then some dumb shit happens not even in your control..

I know a lot of rich people and you wouldn't even know unless they told you or their kids drive new cars. My friend has the biggest pool in the united states lol he was on the travel channel.

For most my childhood, poor. My parents divorced early, our mother took care of my brother and me on just welfare. We had very little.

We were about average I'd say. I live in a 2 story home and always had food but there were many times when I couldn't have things others would have but that's not exactly terrible. After I grew up a bit I realized although I wasn't rich I sure wasn't AS poor as most of my friends. For a long time it was only my mom who worked full time minimum wage and we were still better off then most of my friends living 4 miles away. It got so bad with my mom working all the time I had a school project of drawing the people in my home and I didn't draw my mom because she wasn't ever home. That hurt my mom bad and when I was old enough to understand how fucked up that was it hurt me that I wouldn't put my own mother in a "family portrait". Since then for that and many other reasons I split all my moms responsibilities so she doesn't have to constantly work as much.

My dad had deep depression from getting scammed for 12million on a loan from my grand parents and around age 8 he shut down, stopped working because of legit injuries and depression but basically I was alone a lot or with my gma as a child.

My parents always dide pretty well. My dad worked two jobs a lot of the time and my mom always had one. They paid for their house pretty quick and there were multiple cars in the driveway. I was spoiled at times but in a lot of other ways I was far from it. After they divorced my dad didn't have it in him anymore than he had the time to work two jobs. He made the difference up with lots of weed, which always made for a nice Christmas. He didn't have a lot of money at that point really but he was an alcoholic so I can't say for sure. My mom on the other hand always did her best to never have to spend any more money than she did time on her kids. Her and 'the husband' probably made 150k+/yr and they were cheap as shit. Had to beg to get in to sports, never took me anywhere, had to eat michelinas while they went out to restaurants all the time, even buying take out for me was often too much.  Meanwhile she had so much jewelery she needed a safe and often looked like some kind of middle aged pimp. Yeah I'm bitter.

first 5 years of my life, as far as I remember, very poor.
I remember sleeping hungry most nights, having to pay for home rents was a trouble.
it was only my mother saved us, teaching in different schools, working hard to raise us.
my dad was a complete bum, still is.
Now it's much better, again thanks to my mom.
home is ours, no rent, no trouble. a complete life she brought to us alone through these years.
this thread really made me think about my past and compare it to my present.
how much better we are now.
THANK GOD

I was in the top 10% richest in the planet while growing up and simultaneously I was under the US poverty my entire childhood.  Wealth and poverty truly are relative unless you are at the very bottom or top.

single mother struggled through the last years of her life and then died alone from breast cancer with nothing. me my mom and my sister lived in two bedroom apartments before ending up on the street.

we are both still trying to make it in a largely cold heartless unforgiving society that would rather great minds shrivel up and die if you cant afford college and dont want to be incriminated with loans.

where i live in the u.s. is borderline third world impoverished and theres no other way to describe it. i get very frustrated when im told americans are lucky. state to state there are huge differences in where money goes. most people are prisoners who just havent been unjustly imprisoned yet. but im sure glad so many rich people are on here. please lobby to make america more compassionate because the rest of us cant do shit.

If it's not prying to much,How does that work out? Sounds like my friend Tyler from 5th grade he was poor as dirt because he lived with his mom but his dad was close a millionaire just didn't care about his son. Same thing with my best friends .His dad made about half a million in 4 years. During that time he made his 15 year old for basically nothing. 3 bucks an hour I think with many months unpaid He eventually stopped paying him completely. It wasn't until he was about 21 that he was able to get a job on his own.

Same pretty much. There were the good times and the bad. My uncle took me and my brother for summer vacation in Cape Cod for a good 10 years. That took a lot off my parents' spending.

I started a paper route when I was 5. By eight I was working under the table in a pet store cleaning tanks and setting up displays. Did that until 16 alon with the newspaper gig. I had 200 newspaper customers on weekdays and almost 300 on weekends. Made a ton of money off those two alone, and on top of here-and-there jobs when I had time (office store, another pet shop, tank raising my own fish to sell etc.)

Worked management in an office for years when I turned 18. Communications & Public Relations for a few more during that period. I'd go back to work at the office since Marketing/PR was by semester.

By age 20 I owned a new car I paid for, had 35k in the bank, paid for my own undergraduate degree, invested in gold/silver coins and stocks, got out at the right time, etc. When the car wreck happened and economy tanked, wife and I lost everything until about a year ago. Had to use rainy day funds and we were downright poor for years.

My parents now own a 300k+ home, boat, two new vehicles, a diversified portfolio, various investments and a few bank accounts.

We were raised to work hard and work for our own money. It worked well for them. They'd likely be broke with nothing had my brother and I never worked for our own stuff. I took odd jobs during downtime.

I worry about the younger generations with no work ethic leeching off their parents. I'm 32 and have been working 27 years already.

We would've been lower working class at best had my brother and I relied on our parents. They'd also have nothing now that they're retired.

It breaks my heart to see posts of people here getting their first job and they're over the drinking age. Economy-wise and work ethic.
