Im at a point for the first time in my life where I can grow facial air. Like an actual goatee or a french mans mustache. Ive decided to go the other route and take pride in shaving....trying to see what epic cheap drug store aftershave/scent im gonna use to brand "Myself" to the world.

Supposedly we've reached, "peak beard" .
I'm trimming mine down to a number one clipper every other day and keeping my kneck and upper cheeks clean. It's convenient and makes me look rugged, but not hirsute. Plus a razor lasts me a fat minute since I'm not covering that much territory. I like to make sure I look peak sexy at the end of the night with my skullcap off and my chef jacket opened up one button for the ladies
And trust me, my hair has no break between my face and chest, so not looking like a caveman takes a bit of manscaping. I've actually had to start keeping my hair a bit shorter as well because I looked at all my old photos and realized exactly why I wasn't finding any mates.

A razor hasn't touched my face since in over ten years. The only reason to bring a blade that close to your neck is to commit suicide. I use a buzzer every once in a while to bring it down to a .5 cm of so.
Your beard will grow longer, OP. Beard growing is like gardening. You only look at it every once in a while, and you let yourself get absorbed in the zen of beard maintenance. I recommend getting a beard comb and a pair of beard shears so you can clip off those crazy stray hairs, or so you can restore balance if one side of your beard grows faster than the other.

I hate the feel of facial hair. Feels like darn pubic hair. Cant stand it. Not to mention its completely impractical depending on where you live. In the PNW? Maybe....but I live in the desert now and the last thing I want is a giant face warmer in 100+ degree weather

Yeah fucking right. I'm sure Proctor & Gamble swung GQ a few pennies to produce that article. Fuck razors, fuck Gillette, and fuck Proctor & Gamble. Fuck GQ too while you're at it.
I go between having a beard, and then shaving it all off with a neck trimmer. I would love to grow a nice big beard, but it just gets too annoying for me after a few months. It's hard to eat shit without getting food all up in your moustache and stuff. When eating starts to become annoying, I give it another few weeks or so and then cut it all off.
I definitely like a couple of weeks growth at least rather than being clean shaven. I feel about 13 when I'm clean shaven.

I always have stubble, around a #1 or #2 razor guard length. Beards are the shit!

I don't know, I found the peak beard thing kinda neat. I read some actual abstracts on it and bullshitted a friend of mine about it.
It looks like it goes in like sixty year cycles, which, as he puts it, would make a lot of sense for dudes coming into prime beard growing age (depending on how your facial hair develops) and not wanting to look like their dads.
I mean, I was shaving all through highschool, but my prime beard growth was only really coming into fruition in my mid twenties, and it's definitely got a bit denser since.
Anyway, as I previously stated, I'm digging on the 1/8th inch frequent clipping. No facial irritation, but not tons of places for crumbs to hide.

I could see the weather making the beard a bitch. The itchiness goes away after a bit though, especially if you let it grow uncut for a while (the hairs lose their pointiness). When you shave, you cut the hairs and make them sharp, and the short hairs are pretty stiff too, so they poke like crazy. Using the shortest setting on a buzzer keeps the sharp part of the hairs away from your skin and makes the beard to light to hold the heat in. The razor shave always left my skin really irritated too, and growing a beard back from a razor shave is hell by comparison.

actually, it's a bit more complicated than just sixty year cycles now that I'm going over it again

It is no wonder you can't explain it, because Will Smith didn't have a beard in Bad Boys. Also; wanting your beard to look like Will Smith's, LOL.

First of all, please stop calling that a beard, because that is in no way, shape, or form a beard.
If that is the type of "beard" you aspire to grow, it just seems like you probably couldn't grow a proper, full, and most importantly, an actual real beard.
