I sold a ton of weed in college, did a ton of drugs, more than I ever thought was possible. I barely scraped by, but I learned so much I'm able to perform well in real life, where it matters and grades, eh fuck em.
If you're going to go that route make sure you do extra curriculars. When you get into the real world you're going to need to be able to talk around your shitty grades. Also you're probably going to miss a lot of class so this will suppliment that. I volunteered a ton and went on all the extra credit field trips etc. I did field work, independent studies, etc. I failed a ton of classes, didn't get too many A's but I can interview with the best of them. You just have to be aware of the fact you're not getting fucked up just to get fucked up, you're exploring life. Classic psychedelic mindset. Except when you're not tripping the trippy stuff is other people's minds and the experiences you can have.
But I had a ton of friends go to jail/rehab/just really lost cause all they would do is get really fucked up and not balance it with anything.
Also don't only be willing to go the extra mile, you fucking have to go the extra mile on everything. Or else you're just a drug addict slipping through the cracks. And take some pride in yourself.
Do this and maybe, just maybe you'll be fine.
Also I was an environmental resources management major, with a water resources management minor. I think the fact that what I did was 100% applicable to the job market and not some lofty idealistic path helped. Cause now I'm doing some lofty idealistic shit with lots of options.
Also always have a job. When you're in an interview and they ask you why your grades suck, you can now say you worked 20 some hours a week and it took a while to get the time management down.

I went back to school studied engineering for a bit and got a job as an engineer in the semiconductor industry after years of applying.
There is the notion that there is a STEM deficit. This is debated and I don't believe it. There is a glut of STEM majors and most science degrees are not marketable. Electrical engineering has lost something like 20% of existing jobs in the past ten years or so. The majority of physics graduates are not able to get a STEM job of any kind and work in non-STEM related areas. There is no current non-industry sponsored study that shows any deficit of STEM grads. Of course industry always cries for more subsidies into training their future workforce. Why would they ever tell society to stop training science grads so their employee pool and shrink and their labor costs can grow? They never will.
My advice for anyone considering science is to shoot for a PhD or forget it and major in something more marketable. The STEM areas I think are marketable are applications to medicine and healthcare (which is sometimes included in "STEM", sometimes it isn't) and computer science/programming.

Is it possible to do fairly well in college while also maintaining a minor drug/alcohol habit?
I did it. I got stoned every day. Every single day. Most can't. Most of the people in college today shouldn't be there anyway. They are getting ripped off by a fraudulent ethos.

Well I'm Neuroscience and there's no way I'm going for my PhD. I don't really like research or being in the lab to be honest. I'm either going into pharmaceutical sales or medical device marketing. I actually feel like I have an advantage over the people that got business and political science degrees since I have taken a number of pharmacology course.

Leaving science for sales and marketing in the medical industry sounds like a great idea. Especially since you don't want to go for a PhD.
