Internet Speed (Which is faster?)
    #21902713 - 07/05/15 08:32 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Forgive me if this is a stupid question. I am an older guy that's not very computer savvy.

There are two internet providers in my area that I am looking into purchasing my internet service from. I am having a hard time understanding which of the two companies have the faster internet connection. Can someone please help me? What is the difference between MB and MG? Which of these two internet providers have the faster internet, the one with 7 MB OR 10 MG?

Please follow the below links

Thank you in advance!

What's up dude? That's a very weird first post on a website about mushrooms. Ask Google about it I guess.

I can't find any reference online to what MG is as far as data is concerned
MG stands for milligram which has nothing to do with computers
MB stands for megabyte whuch is a certain amount of data that would be used for internet

The second link must have made a mistake and typed MG instead of MB which would mean you should read the MG as if it said MB

That's the only thing I find on the subject, so that must be what happened. If you want to be sure, call or email the company and ask if the should should read MB instead of MG

If you use a lot of internet, pick the one with the highest MB amount (:

If you have questions about mushrooms, they'll be answered on this site quickly most likely
If you have random questions about other stuff like technology, you can ask here too, but you may not get expert advise since not every one here is tech savvy

When Internet service providers use MB, they are stupidly referring to MbPS (megabits per second). When MG is used, it's an abbreviation for "megs", which also refers to MbPS.

It should also be noted that this is the maximum download data rate. A lot of times you won't get near that number, and uploads speeds are always significantly slower than the download speed.

I can assist a bit here.  My entire career has revolved around internet technology in some way shape or form so maybe I can shed some light on the two places for OP.

The first link you provided (wmtel) uses WiMAX which is a long range wi-fi type network.  Sort of like the home routers/modems people use that have wireless for their house, but on a massive size and scale.  Like over the whole town, or a massive area like a Cell network would cover.  Wimax is a good choice if you live in the boonies where you cannot get a cable modem or DSL, and satellite is your only option.  Satellite sucks btw because ots unidirectional.  You have latency as the data beams down from the satellite to you, and then you have to use dial up or dsl to send your signal back out the internetl.  Its some hokey crap in general.

WiMAX will have issues simiilar to cell phones or other wireless access.  Speeds will not be that 'great' but if you are not a heavy internet user and just want to check email and browse the web, it would be fine.

The second link you posted sells DSL.  DSL is high speed over a phone line.  The quality of the lines from their local phone office to your house matter.  If you have old or bad lines, you will get terrible signal and low low speeds or no connection at all.  They will be able to run a test to see if your lines even make the basic requirements or not.  DSL also is limited by the physical distance from your house to their central office.  Different DSL technologies can only go so far, etc.  Farther you are, lower the speeds you can get.

I personally would be leary of the DSL company soley because they are being sneaky/tricky using MG instead of stating flat out MB or megabits/megabytes.  I've seen companies do this in order to legally get around their customers claiming they dont get the speeds they were sold.

But if these are your only choices, I would call the DSL company first and tell them  you are interested and have them run whatever checks they need to run, etc etc.

DSL, since it runs over physical wires, is not affected by environmental conditions and such, so in theory if your lines check out good and the provider is not a complete pile of ass you will get more reliable speeds and connections with that.

Like I said though, if you are far away they may tell you that you only qualify for their slowest speed, and if thats the case you might be better off getting the WiMAX at their higher speed.

Hope this helps and I hope I didnt overcomplicate it.

Also, it does look like the wmtel company offers DSL as well,  but only for Woolstock.  They do list that they can do FASTER speeds if thats what you want, but you have to get pre-qualfied for it.  Probably has to do with how close you are to their nearest tower and such.

If cost isn't much of an issue either way then get whichever will give you the fastest speed.  Now a days websites and general internet stuff almost assumes everyone has some sort of high speed so getting the lowest line, like 1Mb, will be waaaaaay slower then one would think comparing it to dialup.  So unless money is super tight avoid the slowest options they have.

After all that, if you are still unsure, post some more details about your situation, your living arrangement like if its a house or apartment.  If you are in town or out in the sticks. etc etc

I think this is some kind of sales gimmick. How many people checked out the linked website? Why would someone's first post on the shroomery be about computers? Why has OP not checked back in? I bet that opening post went up on hundreds of social media sites at the same time or something.

Not so sure about that, the use of the : confused : greamlin makes that a bit more doubtful, as its specific to this board software unless someone is manually clicking the grems.

And those are very specific areas being serviced.  Its not like this is some ad for a product that could sell to anyone on the internet.  Only people in those small towns would be the possible sales target, and who blindly goes on random internet forums to advertise for specific local business?  The chances of getting a sale would be sooooooooooooo insanely small that even programming bots would be stupid in this scenario.

Its more likely just a normal lurker as this site has many thousands of them, that realized people have some clue about what they are talkijng about and decided to post.  Thats my guess.

I'd be a lot more apt to lean towards it being a sales bot / spammy post if the links/product being sold had any possible way to target people internet wide, but internet providers just isn't t hat thing.  Maybe if it was selling HOSTING space or something.

That makes sense I suppose. I don't see what there is to gain, its just an odd first post, that's all. I mean he did good for being bad at computers... I don't know how to put links in a post like that. My wife had to get me signed up on this website because I AM bad with computers.

Ohh well. I'll drop it. Fairwell forever new.computer.guy. you will live on in our hearts and minds evermore.
