Blue Oysters, first timer growing
    #21898736 - 07/04/15 09:52 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

A few measly pins, I know, but I was about 90% sure most of my bags would be failures so I have to post my very fist experiment with growing mushrooms!

Only a little mold at the top of one bag, but it should be fine since the bag is fully colonized. One bag, however, while producing a few pins, doesn't seem to be colonizing too much at all, and there is about a golf ball-sized patch of black gunk in it, I think it might be algae. Is it possible that algae could grow on these things?

You can see here that I've had a busy day cutting holes around newly emerging pins to give them a better chance.

I'll post updated ITT. Not sure how long it'll take the pins to mature, but I'll track their progress for sure.

Also, when is a good time to harvest the mushrooms? Are there any signs I should look for as to whether or not they're ready to pick? Any special way I should harvest them? How many flushes do you think they will produce?

harvest them when they are pretty big but before the margins (edges) of the cap have flattened. pic of the black spot? number of flushes depends on how you care for them. usually you'll get 2-3 indoors, and several more than that outdoors. indoors it is hard to keep the fungus gnats and trichoderma out after the second flush, ime
