Scared with pressure cooker
    #21898382 - 07/04/15 08:25 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys, I'm close to start the process right now and needing some support from you. I've always been scared of pressure cookers, specially when putting glass inside.

This is my current process:

I made 2 holes in my mason jars. I also cut a mask filter and place it between the jar and the lid.

Is this filter ok or is it too thick?

After that I've cooked 850grams  / full bag of Redmill wheat berries for 20 minutes.

After that I put some lids on the bottom of the pressure cooker plus a cloth, so the jars won't touch the bottom.

I've managed to place 4 medium sized jars on the pressure cooker.

My question is, how to avoid explosion on the pressure cooker? does the jar need to "breathe" through the lid holes which I also have the filter and not be sealed? is the cloth still necessary when I have the lids on the top? Is this pressure cooker fine (apart from the size)

Is it really going to sterilize? I was watching some youtube videos and some people were saying (not mushroom growers) that the pressure cooker is not really effectfull for killing bacteria.

I also haven't soaked the wheat overnight, so I'm not sure if I need more time to expose bacteria expores.

I'm waiting for you guys to say the "go ahead" because I don't want to screw up. I'm a newbie I've been reading a lot of material and I've made a lot of mistakes still.

Dont seal the holes in the lid just cover the jar lid with foil during the PC run.

If ran properly it shouldn't explode.

Not too sure about those filters tho and I'm assuming they weren't cheap either?

I remember being afraid of my first PC
I was like a caveman and stood about 10 ft away poking it with a stick

But anyways
I know nothing of the filters you use. I do however know that the filter should go Ontop the lid
Not between the jar and the lid
Then cover with two layers of foil

Also you say "is it really going to sterilize"?
Why else would the majority of the community do their grains in a pressure cooker?

Aslong as you pc at 15 psi for 90 minutes you should be good

Also. Nothing is going to explode, it's reccommended you tighten your jars all the way tight. Then loosen the lid by a 1/4 turn, then after you pc, close the lid tightly and Shake that jar up

like he said, cover lids with aluminum foil, you don't want to oversaturate your substrate. pressure cookers are usually manufactured with several safety features to avoid any dangerous cooking. As long as steam is leaving your pressure cooker, you should be fine. Its capturing all the steam inside and building high pressure that causes pressure cooker explosions.

so the jars can't explode inside the pressure cooker?

No, at least not inside the 90 minutes lol. Who knows what happens if you leave them in there without more water to steam up.

They will explode if you release the pressure really fast during or after the heat.

Didn't know that, thanks for spreading your knowledge. You'd be a fool to open the cooker while heated up anyways though.

Check out YouTube for videos of your specific pc in action.  That will help quite a bit with your stress level.

What brand?

These lids make no sense. Looks like you plan to inject through the smaller hole in your lid which will pierce the filter material rendering it ineffective as a filter. If you need an injection port use RTV silicone to fill that smaller hole and also use the rtv to attach some of that filter material to the GE hole. You would probably be better off using SFD patches though. You are also putting the lids on upside down.

Just last week someone made a post complaining they couldn't even get past the PC stage. Kept blowing his jars up. We were all like wtf are you doing. Well as soon as the time was up he was immediately lifting the jiggler thing and releasing all the pressure as fast as he could. He was blowing the lids off every single jar I guess. Just let it cool to room temp and you'll never blow anything up.

How do I know if it is running dry if I can't open the lid?

What is a SFD patch?
I didn't know RTV silicone was the right one, I didn't use silicone because I thought it would melt on the pressure cooker. I read about this RTV and now I know it has temperature resistance properties. Good idea.
Coming back to the LID, some guy on youtube said to use on the opposite side to prevent explosion, I really don't understand the science behind it but maybe it's to avoid building vacuum on the jars?

Also is there any alternative to pressure cooker to sterilize the substrate? anything that doesn't use pressure?

You'll know its running dry if you have no steam coming out of the PC

Pressure cooking offers the sterilization you seek

Also a SFD is a synthetic filter disc.
Some sponsors carry it. It's what the pros you and what you should use also

You have to use a PC with anything other than the pftek. Endospores man. They only die in a PC. If you use the of tek you can boil/steam them.

You can boil grains for 8+ hours, or use fractional sterilization, though most instructions for fractional sterilization are totally incorrect. But you already have a pressure cooker so use it.

Hi guys, sorry, I still have a few questions:

1) Should the jars be filled with any water or should they be very dry when going in the pressure cooker?
2) Should I close the jar tightly with the lid or should the lid be loose when the jars are in the pressure cooker?

Thanks!
