Rag Veil Amanita - Gorgeous! With Pix

Stumbled upon a gorgeous patch of over a dozen of these impressively sized mushrooms (this one was second largest). My mushroom guide once again says the edibility of this mushroom has not been determined and therefore it should not be eaten. Too bad, because these are meaty, dense, and smell fresh and clean.
The timing of my pick was perfect, too, with the veil JUST beginning to tear.

Not sure which species you are saying that is but it looks like it's from the section Lepidella which contains some deadly species.

I believe it is an Amanita cinereopannosa. My National Audobon Society Guidebook describes it perfectly. "Large, dull white mushroom with angular patches on cap; ragged ring and basal rows of scales on rooting stalk." Habitat is also consistent. On ground near pines, often in sandy soil.

Nah the warts don't look right for cinereopannosa. Amanitas from the section Lepidella can be kind of difficult to tell apart, they should generally all be avoided anyway.

I'll bow to your expertise in the matter. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Checking additional sources now.
No matter what the ID, it is a majestic, eye-catching and sturdy mushroom. I'm so glad I stumbled upon it. The top "habitat pix" cost me a bunch of mosquito bites!
