I really want to give him a couple cakes to fruit in his terrariums with his dart frogs (he'll have to change up his routine with them a little, but not too much)- I know this is not optimal- call it a novelty grow. But we just wanted to make sure his beautiful rain forest frogs would not be harmed in any way. Anyone have input on this?

Are you going to eat them? Honestly it just seems like a bad idea overall and for many reasons. I don't think it would hurt the frogs but I doubt it will be a good grow. I wouldn't eat anything that fruits. Also if you happen to get mold hopefully that doesn't spread to the terrarium. My advice would be to buy a $6 plastic bin and then you can just pretend it has frogs in it.

Oh I definitely intend to do that as party favors for people- we were wondering for purely emotionally pleasing reasons. To see one of them chillin on the cake and then mange mange mange- it would just be really cool.

I wouldn't worry about a cake contam for one flush and some picture opportunities. Have you ever tried fruiting a cake inside the pint glass? maybe that would keep the mess down a bit

I would be more concerned about eating mushrooms that poison frogs crawled all over personally, if they wont be eaten it would make a cool picture

My friend was taking care of dart frogs and random mushrooms would grow in the terrarium. Dart frog conditions are pretty favorable, but likely a little low in FAE. Add a small fan inside and I think it could work.

Dart frogs are not poisonous in captivity. They tend to ignore mushrooms as well; I doubt that the presence of a cubensis would be detrimental to the frogs. The mushrooms, if not some random species, would be safe to eat.

interesting. you learn something new everyday. are they poisonous in the wild because they consume something poisonous?

From what I've read, the exact source is unknown, but yes it comes from food in their natural habitat, although I don't think it's because they are eating something poisonous. They eat mainly insects: ants, termites, beetles, flies... Some more poisonous than others... Poison Dart Frogs are purely carnivorous so it is likely bio-accumulated from their prey.
My guess is that their digestive system is responsible for producing more potent toxins, which they then excrete. There is one species of snake, Leimadophis epinephelus, that is immune to the Golden Poison Dart Frog's poison though.

Quite interesting, I didn't know they were only poison in the wild.
