What does your Cordyceps mycelium smell like?
    #21893831 - 07/03/15 06:22 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I just grew out some C. sinensis (CS4) onto wheat berries, and as I was drying the colonized berries in the oven, they started to smell kinda bad, with a pungent and slightly ammonia-like odor.  When I smelled them straight out of the jar, they just had a musty, slightly sharp odor.

Anybody noticed this before on Cordyceps?  I'm hoping I don't have invisible contamination, and that my culture IS Cordyceps…

I had a CS4 culture as well, that smelled really strong of ammonia. I couldn't bring myself to consume the myc, so now i'm trying C. militaris to see if it has the same smell.

Ah, good to know that someone else experienced it!  I haven't done anything with the dried grain yet.  It has absolutely no smell now that it's been dried, but I still a little leery…

mine also smelled like ammonia. in other cultures, this is a sign of contamination. i assumed it was contaminated and tossed it to the chickens. maybe my eggs will be medicinal?
