Noob needs pointers on spawning to bulk

Howdy yall! I'm about to do prepare some substrate for some jars of treasure coast mycelium I've got. After doin a lot of lookin, I've decided to go with a 50% Coir, 25% hpoo, 25% verm, with a little oyster shell. I know I should be using gypsum but Im completely broke and don't have time to wait till payday so I hope this will suffice. Ive also been reading that you want to pasteurize the substrate rather than sterilize it. Is it wrong to sterilize a mix like this? The meat thermometer I have is to short to reach the center of my substrate in a the bag. Any help is greatly appreciated!

i would pasteurize it personally. Im unsure what will happen if you sterilize it, but the main idea is that you'll be nuking everything in there, as opposed to leaving the beneficials to help fight anything you don't want in there.

the only sub you can get away with sterilizing/partial sterilizing (Bucket TEK) is CVG anytime you add more nutes (even just coffee to the mix) you have to properly pasteurize. You say your thermometer won't reach the center of your bag but will it reach the center of a quart jar? if so you could pack your sub in quarts and pasteurize in a hot water bath like RR's tek I can find the link if you've never seen it or stick your sub in a pillowcase and fill a tote with 170 degree water and drop her in there for an hour then you have to hang it to drip dry for a day or so to drain/cool when it's time to spawn just bring each handful to field capacity as you fill your tub up to spawn personally I use 1/2 gallon jars in my PC whenever I have to properly pasteurize super eazy and its already at field capacity when done let me know if you have trouble finding the TEK's I can link em

Whenever working with poo based substrates, you want to pasteurize it, or else you'll likely end up with trich. If the meat thermometer you have can't reach to the center of the bag, then put the substrates in quart jars. Put foil over the top and stick the thermometer in, it should reach to the center. Or if you can get an electronic meat thermometer, it has a much longer reach so you can take the reading outside the PC with the lid loosely placed on top. This enables each jar to heat up evenly. I follow Frank's pasteurization tek and I've had great results so far. Here's a link: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17246844/fpart/all/vc/1

I'm a big fan of pouring 5 quarts of boiling water into a bucket with a brick of coir & 2 qts of verm...
Never noticed any extra pay out from complicating the process.
If you use poo, you need to pasteurize it.

I have been using poo for almost 10 years. Poo/verm/birdseed/other. I place it an a spawn bag and STERILIZE the shit out of it in pressure cooker for 2 to 3 hours depending on amount. Then i add a ridiculous amount of liquid culture. Up to 60ml for 13 cups of substraight. Works just fine for me.

Thanks all of you for the quick response! I love how there's so many ways to get shit done. So does this pillow case method work well? I have done something like this with wood shavings and I guess I just though Hpoo might be too prone to contams to use such a crude method. I would rather be safe than sorry though and do Frank's Pasteurization tek if that's a better way to go and maybe borrow a thermometer from a neighbor.

The pillow case just holds your substrate during the pasteurization process. When you're done you remove the pillowcase and let it drain overnight. IME it's pretty messy. I'd rather use bags or jars.
I don't worry too much about the internal temperature because I have a shitty stove and it takes a long time to get the water temperature up to 160. I just pasteurize it for an extra hour to make sure the core has reached the proper temperature for at least 90 minutes. As long as you don't raise the temperature too high you can't pasteurize for too long.
Also I pasteurize pretty small quantities of sub so there's less difference between external and internal temps.
