I let a friend break my jars up for me yesterday, thought it was simple enough. Showed him how to lightly pound the jars against the carpeted concrete to transfer the shock.
I turn around and see him repeatedly over-head smashing a single corner of the jar into the ground, very recklessly. I was cringing, but didn't think he could actually fuck it up. Sure enough though, the last jar shattered glass and grain all over the carpet. In the jars he didn't break, the bottom cm of grain looked like mashed potatoes from all the force he put on it.
I was pissed! Some people have no common sense I guess. You can get away with smashing the jar on pretty rough things as long as you're not hammering it. But he was putting all the force on one bottom corner of the jar, sending shockwaves in all kinds of rough directions through the glass. I always shake them on their side so the energy is spread over the entire length of the jar; a lot less noise and pressure on the glass that way.

Sorry about the loss of your fully colonized jar. That's a shame.
I use a glancing blow with a rubber mallet while holding the jar by the lid in my other hand. Suspended in the air, it can recoil and absorb the blow, and the grain breaks up in just a couple of hits. Never broken a jar yet.

Also pp5 have less thermal insulation than glass. So it let more heat to escape which make them a good choice for the people that lives in warm weather conditions. The only bad thing is that it doesn't let you see what is going on as clear as the glass jars.
OP just get a bicycle wheel like in the RR videos.

If you don't have a bike tire (some people actually don't) just use 2 stacked oven mitts like I do
