Freezing Spore Syringes?
    #2189106 - 12/19/03 01:05 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Is this possible to do safely? I made a shit load of syringes recently out of normal boiled purfied water. I noticed one I made about 2-3 months ago germinated in the syringes since I sax a little ball off mycelium. So can I freeze them and store them in the freezer to prevent this? I'm going to make my syringes with distilled water from now on since they dont have any minerals in them like normal water does.

Nope. Refrigerate them and you'll be fine for a year though.

I guess you didnt understand my question. I can't refrigerate them!! I made them with water that has minerals in them. Its just a matter of time b4 they germinate on me. I was knocking up some jars with a half used syringe I made about 2 months ago and b4 I started I noticed it had a ball of mycelium in it. I am not going to be using 500 syringes anytime soon. SO I CANT REFRIGERATE THEM!! Sure if I go get some distilled water and make some I can store them in the frig for a year. This aint the case. Anyone else with an answer?

Since the spores are already full of moisture, when you freeze them you risk killing the spores by literally cracking them open. Don't know how much of an issue this is, I guess it would depend on the elasticity of the spore. Just a guess? Never really trired it!

No you can?t freeze them. I?ve had spores in distiled water do the same thing. I?ve seen them come from vendors the same way.

OK well thanks for clearing that up. I guess I shouldnt have made so many syringes out of all my prints. I dont really plan on using them all in a few months. I'll just hope none of them germinate and if any do I will just use them. Maybe I'l just trade them all for prints in the marketplace. I went a little overboard with making them. Also  at magash

i'm sure i read somewhere that myc cultures could be kept viable in a deep freeze(chest freezer) but not in a standard freezer because a standard freezer temp cycles, where as a deep freeze maintains a constant temp.
this could also be true for spore syringes,if you have a deep freeze there is one way to find out,and it sounds like you could afford to waste 1 syringe if it doesn't work.

Nope dont got a chest freezer. I could always test putting one in the freezer in the frig. And leave it in there for a month then let it thaw and knock up jars with it. I"m thinking it wouldnt work cuz freezing it ruptures molecules or some shit, fuck if i know. I just wanted to see if anyone else has done it before with success.

Hey, let me give you some hope. I know, from a very good mycologist, that freezing the spores don't necessarely kill them. He was able to freeze a couple of syringes, just for testing, and the were still viable .

I mean, i'm pretty sure myself that spores can handle the freeze. It would be ridiculous that in nature, every single fungi spore die in winter. How would they reproduce at spring if no spores are left and most mycelium was frozen to death?!

I say freezing your syringes may actually work.

Just give it a try with a couple, you have 500 !

.fs.

Tru, I think I will. I was thinking the same thing you explained.
Thanks
