First Monotub! Please see pics and advise.
    #21890441 - 07/03/15 12:32 AM (5 years, 7 months ago)

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to check out my grow.
This is my first monotub.

This grow is golden teacher (from spore print) on wheat berries spawned to coir/verm 70/30 with used coffee grounds and a couple spoons on gypsum.
Tubs were put into fruiting conditions on 6/25 after what I thought was 100% colonization.  Used Frank's dial the monotub like a boss tek.
Current ambient temps are 71-82. I dont have a hygrometer so I can't tell what the RH is but the substrate looks moist.

I saw the first pins 3 days ago, and this photo is from today.

What worries me are the big hairy blobs of mycelium growing on the substrate. Is this normal, or is it a symptom of lack of FAE or something?
I also feel that the tub is progressing very slowly, and that the pins are very sparse.

All advise/reassurance welcome

Thank you!

Sorry for the crappy pics, my monotub is semi-clear, can't see $hit.

For me in the past I've had blobs like that and it was contamination and sometimes they still grew.  Maybe why they are taking a while and are spread out with not too many pins but don't take my word on anything I said I've only grown a few monotubs by now.

Looks like an extreme lack of FAE rather than contamination. The mycelium is creeping up the liner which indicates it needs more fresh air. Make sure to loosen up the polyfil on the bottom holes and fan it out a few times a day.

Another pic

Psilosoulful, thanks for the input. I adjusted the polyfiI to allow more FAE, also will try fanning the tub every now and then.

grasshoppertexas, what is your main method of growing?

Thanks guys.

Just throwing this out there. I do agree more fae is beneficial. Adjusting both top and bottom holes helps will do this. Me personally, I don't even have top holes stuffed. However I have yet to fan my tubs. Fanning isn't a replacement for fae and really won't help at all. Fanning is only done after misting to help evaporate it, and I don't even do that lol. I have enough fae, it evaporates relatively quickly.

My gut reaction was too little FAE too. Stunts the fruit growth and can make the mycelium stretch and puff into the air like that.

Mad Season, IconS, thank you for the input.

I've increased FAE by pulling out some polyfil and increasing the airflow in the room.
I'll give them a good fanning 1-2 times a day as well.
Will give an update in a few days!

Update:

Loosened all polyfil, fanned tubs a few times, leaving room fan on 24h.
There is zero condensation on the tub walls, and the water droplets on the substrate have almost all gone - Seems that the tubs have too much airflow now, and that the RH is very low.
I dont see any improvement with the fruits either.

I really hoped to get a good harvest from this. Pretty bummed now :*(

Should I leave the tub as-is (high FAE, low RH) and mist every now and then,

or should I put some polyfil back and bring up the RH again?

Thanks guys... this is pretty damn stressful and frustrating for a noobie.

Don't sweat it too much. There will be plenty of future tubs, for you to dial in. You're already ahead of most first timers. Some mycelium behaves differently. Everyone's micro climate is unique. Don't stray too far from the accepted norm. Your mushrooms are looking good, and your next batch will look even better!!

The surface looks like it still has tons of water droplets to me, which is where the humidity counts. Doesn't matter if the walls have condensation or not, isn't an accurate gauge of surface humidity. I'd leave it as is for a few days and keep fanning. But dialing in tubs can be tricky, I'm not claiming to have it down either.

And you don't want the room fan blowing too much air at the tubs. Just keeping air circulation in the area is enough I think.

Green Bastard that makes me feel alot better. You're right. This is the first of many

Icon, yes the substrate still has lots of water droplets. I will keep the FAE up... thanks!

The tubs do look a bit better today... growth is still very slow but its constant.

How long can I keep the fruits growing for? as long as it takes for the veil to break?

Yep, until the veils break or contaminants start to surround the fruit bodies. Fruits can abort while immature and stop growing completely, but I've never heard of that happening in a whole tub. If any look like they've aborted, I just pick them along with the others that have broken veils.

Update:

Things are looking alot better. All polyfil is loose, not fanning so much anymore because the sub is drying out along the walls. The RH seems super low but the substrate is pretty wet so it seems to be holding up. Misted once today.

You expected right, veil has broken on a few of them.

My next question is....

Should I reach in and harvest just the ones that are mature?
Or should I harvest everything now, including the pins, and then rehydrate and fruit again?
Sorry for all the questions, I hope one day I can be the one answering

Just take the ones that are mature. The others will finish within a couple days, then take them. I usually start misting as soon as I start picking. And another misting when I've picked it completely clean.

If there's a cluster of fruits that are connected at the base and one is mature and the others aren't I try to wait on picking the ready one so I don't disturb the others. Or sometimes I'll pick the whole cluster if the younger ones look close enough.
