Ferns from spores

Has any of you ever attempted to try to grow a fern from spores? Today I had the notion (after looking at a family member's fern plants) to try getting some ferns growing from spores. I mean, I know it's probably waaay easier to just get a clump from their fern plant, but for some reason I think the bragging rights of starting a fern from fern spores would be cool.
Ever tried it?

It's been a long time since I grew ferns from spores but if i remember correctly it's a lot like cacti seeds. I remember using a substrate that retained a fair amount of water, saturating it and then microwave it. Afterwards disperse the spores over top and seal the container shut. It was just a side project our professor had us do in my horticulture class to help propogate ferns for the schools arboretum. Long time ago though

Nice. Did he have you collect the spores yourself or did you have prepackaged spores? That is something I forgot to mention in the OP. From the limited reading I have done on the subject, you have to find a ripe 'spore pod' (don't remember the terminology) and then collect the spores from it by letting it get dry and have a lot of light...

Paper bags over the sori is the method I used to collect spores. You then sow on a sterile medium, like peat, and keep moist until they sprout. After a while you then pot on the young ferns. It's not that difficult really.
Here's a link on how to do it.>>>>http://www.cpbr.gov.au/ferns/fern.spore.prop.html

Thanks for the link. That one is much more understandable than the other page I was reading.

Well, apparently I was lucky. I have two 'fern prints' full of spores! Hopefully this week I will find some time to get some soil sterilized and see what kind of luck I can have starting them...

Sounds like a plan. Did you just print the fern like you would a mushroom?

Yes, basically. I took two different sections of fronds, put them on two different pieces of card paper, and put them in two different ziploc bags. From what I read, dryness as well as high light triggers the spores to be released. I checked em earlier today, just over 24 hours of being in there, and there was a decent coating of spores dusted on the card paper.
They don't print exactly like mushrooms, though. They aren't just 'dropped' and form neat little lines, they are literally catapulted off the leaves, so it looks more like an even coating of spores all over

Cool. I've only ever used paper bags is why I asked. What species of fern are you growing? There's some cool tree fern types down here in Australia, and in NZ as well. Might give it a try myself.

I Thought I would drop by this thread and say hello. I am a fern spore collector here too, gang..LOL
We have a few species here in the Pacific Northwest that I have genetic material for. I have grown all types. .and have some Sword ferns in the yard. My folks, have the other varieties growing on their property.
Polypodium glycyrrhiza (Licorice fern)
Polystichum munitum (Western Sword fern)
Adiantum - Sp. (Columbia River Gorge, Black Stem)
and Pteridium Sp. (Ostrich-Bracken fern).
I have had some experience starting ferns from spore. at home, and low tech, it can be difficult. I startd mine on the north side of the house (northern hemi), in the shade. and in a cool location in a cold box. (the varieties I am working with have a long cool-damp season).
When I harvest, I harvest pieces of the fern blade with the Sori intact. I just store the dried balde.
Years and years ago. . I was an exchange student to OZ, and NZ. . and I miss the tree ferns, from those countries.

Idk what kind of fern I have here. I grabbed it off a relative's potted fern that they sell at the hardware stores around here. I just saw they had spores on em and thought about trying em...
Maybe I'll have some dumb luck and see something sprout.

Let me know how it does for you CowsRmeat.
I had to keep mine in a cold frame box in the shade of the north side of the house for almost a year before I saw anything happen in my Nursery-cups.
