Tattoos. And covering tattoos you already have.

What do you guys thinks of them, I love them but only have one. And it was a spur of the moment, I want to be like everyone else and be cool type of thing back in highschool. And what I got I now can't stand because it was rushed and in no way is a representation of anything I like or care about.
It's on my upper left shoulder and a few friends of mine have a bunch and say that if I found a good enough guy, I can tell him things I'm in and he'd be able to draw out a design based on the things I stated and even be able to go over it completely or ingrain it into the new tattoo making it look like I never had a different on in the first place.
Anyone ever get tattoos covered up with other tattoos, did it turn out alright? Was it what you wanted or did you have to settle because you just preferred it more than what was there. I'm thinking of getting a half sleeve covering my shoulder and most of the way down to my elbow. Been considering it for a long time now, basically since a few months after I got the first one.
It's not that I don't like tattoos or anything like that, I was just dumb and rushed the one I got without thinking about it and hate this particular one.

Make sure you drop some good cash and find an absolutely amazing artist. Cover ups can be quite difficult

One day I want to have insanely intricate psychedelic sleeve tattoos but that's not gonna be for many years most likely

Just don't. They are a stupid idea and invariably look stupid. Maybe a small tribute to somebody who you lost in an inconspicuous place but as far as I'm concerned there is no such thing as a tattoo artist. They are vandals preying on idiots.

Aspiring tattoo artist here.
I guess everyone is entitled to their opinions. To me, tattoos and body modifications are the most sacred of art. They show that the human spirit is willing to sacrifice pain to express an idea, and willing to make the commitment of wearing it for the rest of his/her life.
I have half inch gauges on both ears and several tattoos, including a sleeve to my wrist in my left arm. Before you ask, I'm an accountant. People are beginning to accept tattoos in professional settings now.
If you're looking for a good cover up, I recommend you research a good artist. Look up the next tattoo convention in your area, that way you don't have to travel far. If you can't afford it, just put a big 'X' over the tattoo and write 'shit happens' next to it!

Covering tattoos is tricky business. It completely depends on the size/colors of the tattoo you want to cover up.. I know a couple tattoo artists. It takes a very skilled artist to cover up another tattoo and do it well, and a lot of times it involves a much larger tattoo with a lot of dark colors. So, depending on the size and nature of the tattoo in question, you are probably looking at several thousand to get a skilled artist to do it. You really don't want to get a scratcher to cover a tattoo.. then you'll have two shitty tattoos on top of each other. So you really need to find a true professional tattoo artist and those are $$$
And anyone who gets tattoos will regret it? Pfft

That's the beauty of it gentlemen, even though you may regret it, it will remind you of the journey you've been through. I can guarantee that almost everybody that gets a tattoo, at one point stops and thinks about their future. Its a risk you have to be willing to take, and that in itself, adds tremendous value to that stain under your skin, that peice of flesh given away to the eternal expression of your soul.

I didn't want to say what it was because it REALLY shows how dumb I am...I got a flowery leafy cross type of tattoo, and I am not religious and was not raised religious
If I could go back I wouldn't get one, but I'm stuck with this one and I truly hate it, it's awkward as fuck when someone who I'm not close with sees it and asks me if I'm religious and it gets awkward because I'm like "oh well uh nah not really it's just not just my thing" and then simultaneously explain why I got a cross then.
All because I got one and didn't even think about the cross and just thought it looked bad ass or something dumb at the time, and now I just want to get something over it or something that at least makes a little sense.
And everyone I know who says it can be covered, hasn't even got it done, so I can't see whether it still looks good after.

What's close minded about it? I think it's fucking stupid. I've seen people with regret and I'v seen older people with faded wrinkled tats They look awful. I did not come to that conclusion over the last two months. Body art, what bullshit. Paint a fucking wall instead of drilling ink into an idiot's skin. Who gives a flying fuck what you think about it really though? Some people do put plates in their lips btw

I think some piercings are tacky as fuck but that's just my own stupid opinion that I keep to myself because it's not my place to judge what other people do to their own body. People do body art and modifications for countless reasons which you apparently don't understand, that's fine. People regrets all sorts of things. Some people regret having sex. Does that mean sex is fucking stupid? No, you just did it with the wrong person, or you are the wrong person.

If it is an impressively artful tattoo it could be just as well appreciated on a canvas on a wall and not etched into a medium that is going to deteriorate in time
Shroomism isn't this whole site about opinion? If you don't give a fuck what mine is I will not go cry in my beer. I think tats and freakshow piercings are for attention whores. That has never been me. That is part of the reason why I don't have an arrest record.

Tattoo techniques have changed bro. The old dude with shitty ink you saw got inked 20-30 years ago maybe more. We've learned a lot since then about how to make good tattoos that last.
I've met old people with good looking tattoos, my uncle has 20 year old tattoos that look as vibrant as my 1 year old tattoos.

You've only seen gutter sluts from the 50's with paper clip tattoos. Artist now take pride and will spend thousands of dollars and countless hours to make masterpieces on people. Most are true works of art and if you can't understand that I feel sorry for you. Stop looking at the tattoo shop next to the bar and start looking at places that actually give a fuck.

That was some really shitty laser removal then. There will always be some scaring regardless (since even the tattoo process itself will often leave scars, they are just not visible under the ink) properly done laser removal uses the the light to break down the ink into smaller particles that the body can absorb and clear out, if all they did was cause it to be so badly scarred that the ink wasn't visible then it wasn't done properly, they effectively just burned the tattoo away.

Shroomism isn't this whole site about opinion? If you don't give a fuck what mine is I will not go cry in my beer. I think tats and freakshow piercings are for attention whores. That has never been me. That is part of the reason why I don't have an arrest record.
That part about the arrest record actually has some merit. I'm taking a course so I can be an EMT, and the book mentions that when you're sizing up a scene to see if it's safe, you should look for things like drugs, weapons, and tattoos. Allegedly, people with tattoos are more likely to loose their shit and have a "behavioral emergency". I'm sure the same bullshit is in the cop training book, and that means the police are going to associate tattoos with an increased possibility of trouble. That never helps.
A tattoo is also a great way to identify somebody. Cops look for that kind of stuff, and if you don't have a tat, then they have to work harder to figure out who you are or how to find you. If you've got the tat they're looking for, then You're basically wearing your ID on your skin where they can see it.
I don't really have anything against tats, but having one doesn't seem to provide any benefits, and the cons seem to outweigh the pros.

I have one so I'm lumped in with the people he's talking about, but I actually do regret mine so while I don't fully agree with him, I do to an extent, and most people I know regret the ones they got too, my dad and friends included. But almost all is because they didnt think about what they were really getting when they got it.
If you're going to permanently paint your body, it should be a long process and we'll thought out one that truly means something to you, just my opinion.

I am trying to anonymously dispense useful advice to young people. That is hardly being an attention whore. I have done pretty much whatever I want by purposely not drawing attention to myself. The police do not bother with me and never have.
Also I think tattoos are generally ridiculous. I get enough pain from just living that I aint getting any more of it on purpose. That's as stupid as making permanent marks on your body that you will likely regret.

Zappa you're so wrong about all this it's not even funny. You're entirely one sided and just being a dickhead. Get over the fact your generation is wrong, %90 of society accepts tattoos as an art form. We inherit the earth soon anyway. Can't wait to see what form of body mod my kids are into. Quit being so bitter.

I'm not bitter. There are a lot of people walking around with tattoos that they regret almost as much as you regret the behavior that is going to result in your next looming body modification.
Society does not accept anything. It doesn't have a brain and if you think 90% of people think tattoos are cool you are severely delusional. Especially the huge ink. Maybe a small dolphin or an in memoriam one but the people who cover significant parts of their body are fucking nutjobs.

Here's a pretty good collection of some research on people with tattoos:
http://www.quora.com/Tattoos/Is-body-modification-correlated-with-socioeconomic-status-psychological-well-being-or-anything-else
The bulk of it seems to suggest that people with tattoos are more likely to get laid, but they're also more likely to go to jail (short term and long term), have "substance abuse problems", suck at school, get into a car with a drunk driver, and be violent assholes.
It seems like there's some support for all the anti-tattoo stereotyping.

I'm definitely not ignorant to how they come off, when I originally got it I wanted it on my forearm but purposely got it so that even a t-shirt can cover it because at the time I also didn't know what career path I wanted to take.
I personally don't view them that way but I realize a lot of people do.

You can get it covered up or removed if you don't like it. There are some amazing artists that can cover it up but I agree with the others, do your research and find a good one to do it for you. Also, make sure it's what you want. Getting them removed hurts like hell...or at least I've heard. Good luck with whatever you decide.
