Pics from beyond the arctic circle, Northern Europe * 5
    #21886454 - 07/02/15 05:44 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I recently was given an invite and opportunity to spend 2 weeks over midsummer in the north of Europe in the scandinavian wilderness, some way beyond of the arctic circle
It was a fantastic fortnight, and I miss the land and the people!

So I'd like so share here pics of some of the sights from there that enchanted me.  :awepreciation:

  • some flowers, there wasn't a whole lot in bloom yet!

  • some fungus

  • a wild rabbit on the lawn in the small hours

  • reindeer ambling along a road. reindeer meat is sooooo tasty!  :rudolph:

  • and one who has returned to whence it came

  • random shots

  • midnight sun, as dark as it got. I saw a sunrise before my flight, then a proper sunset 2 weeks later on my flight home. The constant light really was nice, my first night time at home in darkness was rather depressing!

  • an old quarry, flooded and given back to nature to shape

  • climbing up a fell. Came across some young reindeer, they were curious but kept a good distance. Small fungi in between rocks amongst moss and lichen.

that place looks beautiful, similar to some places I've seen in Idaho, usa. But I've never seen a reindeer in person though.

I believe I have Fallen in Love :inlove:

I'm sooo happy you had such a great time:grin:

I hope you have some stories to share by the water cooler in the shed:smirk:

So when you saw the sun up constantly how was it's rotation. I know the sun travels from east to west but if the sun never goes down how does it travel?

Also Just wondering but when you flush a toilet up there does the water rotate clock wise or counter clock wise:wink:

Berries can be picked at late summer/early autumn at arctic. August to September/late october is season.

Those trees small near quarry.. They are decades old but small plants. I mean quarry have been abadonded ~35years or so. Maybe those trees form big forest in few decades or take more longer time.

Humans just have left that big shithole to ground after price of metal ores went down at ~1980's.

I just say those mines are "shitholes" because I hate mining companies. They ruin habitat, extract money in few decades and it takes fucking alot of time to get nature back. Nature is fragile and slow in arctic.

If it's bad year, dormant season for trees may be 8-9months. Maybe more.:awesome:

Nice pics tho.. I don't complain 'bout them. Just hating to have ruined habitat all around arctic. And those fucking new companies plan to do more mining to arctic. Fuck them.

Pictures will show nice how slow growing those trees and plants are there. That rock area at quarry haven't had trees when it's been shut down at 80's. And there's lots of human buildings underwater at the quarry.

Mining.. Getting profit for a while, then leaving fragile habitat like that.. Humans...
:awesketch:

Btw. Month ago those landscapes were full of snow for a while when sudden blizzard came. Blizzards may occur at mid-summer as well, but it's rare. Two months ago all terrain have been covered by snow. Some areas have year around permafrosts. Still summer days can be +30C, or +5C. You never know it above arctic circle.

And yea, constant light gives a funny smooth buzz and energy after dark winter. Sun really effects to human behavior so much. Best way to feel the buzz is spent 6months over winter in dark and when sun rise up fast, all people starts to around like they have taken speed and it' easy just loose sense of time for few months. It's rather odd sensasion.

Reindeer meat is very good.
Those who are against eating reindeer, old man says: Noone gonna eat your lovely Rudolf because santa uses the fucking modern helicopter today. So no worries.:eskimokiss:

Thanks for the confirmation. I guess that makes sense. Our berry season here (not the artic) is March-June. When is chanterelle season in the arctic? Same time as the berries?

They don't grow there. Only few edible mushrooms grow there.

Amanita muscaria shrooms are everywhere at arctic a lot at same time berries grow. Like most species of mushrooms. Some random species grow very early, and panaeolus shrooms I've find to my surprise they grow only when it's warm summer. May skip one year without any of them, and they are very fragile to cause over-harvesting.

I think agriculture have spread psychoactive panaeolus here. They grow only sunny spots.

Old folk know those edible species and there is only few but that species doesn't grow so north. Or if so, it's very rare find.

Well.. I have accidentally find psychedelic panaeolus shrooms there, even tho books say they don't grow above arctic circle. They pop up after first hot days, some year may be so cold they don't grow well, some years they grow very much.

Mushroom picking is very delecant work there. I mean, I've seen many liberty cap fields later on mushrooms vanished by over harvesting. Those panaeolus pop up at mid-summer or earlier, then later on is liberty cap season. But mushroom season last ~1month, maybe 6-8weeks max. Depends what species mushrooms they are.

Older people know better those mushrooms but there are only brown edible mushrooms they pick up from wilderness.

Liberties grow there from all kind of terrain, I've find them from sand as well.:awesome:

It's just hard to pick them and same time keep balance. Many fields people have over-harvested and liberties/panaeolus have vanished because of it. "bad summer" mushroom hunt season may last only under month. With good luck two months max. Early summer those panaeolus can be find, later liberty caps.

And yea, actually old people have said that only brown-dark color mushrooms are edible, I don't know the species.

These species you talk about grows ~500miles towards south. Hard to find there. People pick up different mushrooms here as edibles.

Actually those close pics from two reindeers have been taken with simple small trick what doesn't cause them run away or scared about human. It's actually very easy to get closer if you know what to do and how they behave.. I'll let it be a secret. :strokebeard:

Anytime someone mentions a secret - I see it as a challenge to solve a riddle....

I'll restrain myself from asking for more details though. I will likely never have the chance to try it out on any reindeer anyway

Actually, approx 3-4am is coldest time and and 3-4pm is hottest.

Picture isn't so far away north where M_H:s pics are taken from. I just copied from internet, but it'll give you reference how it goes..
:cookiemonster:

That's why some cacti of mine can have direct sun +12-14hours or more easily, depends what spot you give for them. Some species shock, but; they all know when it's night and day even tho it's constant light. I think flowers know when to open and shut down based on sun spectrum of color.

Night = yellow sun with white ambient light and day time = blue/white. To eye of human I mean. Humans just can't separate the spectrum of sun so easy. Still night bloomers will know when it's night. And lophs know as well when it's time to get flower full open. Actually peyote i only species what you can get flower there every summer, some species may skip one summer and flower randomly, maybe they get confused. :sun:

Angle of sun really shape cactus plants as well. And they go more blue with constant summer sun. I mean almost every species (for example notocactus etc) have blue hue on skin with 24hour sun.

Early spring at day and flower points towards sun. Picture is taken at noon or so.

03/26/2015

They really like to bend towards south/south-east. All species. Lophs may do funny shapes. That one I haven't turned around, some plants I turn very little because of that angle but slowly. Spring and autumn usually causes "sunspots" to bridgesii species because it moves so fast around sky and change's position from 24hours to 0hour over 6months.

Sun control dormancy/grow season as well. It goes On/Off. Cacti don't get on growing at all after winter before there's enough UV-radiation from sun I've noticed..:sunny:

All that was to be seen was remains of last year flowers that have been preserved through the winter, new foliage was just getting started whilst I was there.

The change of pace of life for 2 weeks was most therapeutic, and all that sunlight is a good recharge for the brain!
