top layer good for cubes?

so i have three tubs, one with top layer, one with frosting layer, and one is mixed...started em all at the same time. so far the one with the top layer is the fastest...waaaaay faster than the others....alot of pins and nearly two mature mushrooms actually the other two didnt even form primordia yet.

Can you elaborate on the the layers vs mixing? Specifically what you did.

a top layer is what remain of the substrate, that you apply to the spawn/sub mix. mixed is a sub/spawn without a top layer or casing frosting is a quart or half of quart of spawn applied at the top of the spawn/sub mix.

I usually do top layers with good results.
I've also done a mix of the three. Mixed most of the sub/spawn, thin frosting layer, then top layer over that.
I wouldn't do a solo frosting layer myself. I'm not a fan of that much spawn exposed.
I like top layers to keep moisture in while I'm dialing my tub in.
