Quick BRF tek related question.

In the video of BRF/PF tek they don't seem to uncover the inoc ports on the lid, they just keep them covered with tape. Is it okay to leave tape over the inoc ports until jars are fully colonized? Or do the jars need those 4 holes open? I'm just checking because they really don't say anything about whether to leave the tape or to remove it.

The dry verm is your filter so uncover the holes.

Yup, screw the tape. Totally unnecessary. I've heard some people use it as an extra water barrier for sterilization, but don't overfill the pot and you're fine

micro pore tape keeps contams off the dry verm barrier as extra safety. just inoculate right through it, no point in peeling it off!

Inoculation has been complete for a little over 2 days, so tape or no tape? No mycelium has began to form yet or at least none I can see. I had the tape on this whole time until about 5min ago.

up to you
if you can manage to leave the cakes alone until they finish you're good without but if you're gonna touch the jars and move them you gonna want something to keep mold spores off your dry verm.

It's one of those things that shouldn't make much difference one way or another. Most consensus I've seen is that it doesn't help. I didn't use any on mine and got full colony, no contamination after 2 weeks

Oh this is a hard discipline. Don't play with the jars, stick em somewhere and leave them alone.... I still can't do it

I have them sealed in a clear tote, I will probably not be able to resist examining them during their process though. I might just have to re-tape them so long as it's not going to fuck anything up having those holes covered :P. Is contamination the only reason for keeping them taped? Like does one way help colonize faster than the other? Just trying to cover all my bases before I commit to doing it a certain way.

no difference..
you should keep your jars on a shelf so all you have to do to check them is spin them around. when you move them you shift the dry verm layer around. just move them steadily.
