First Time Growing Anything
    #21886054 - 07/02/15 01:42 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

So I have never really grown anything and would like to start by growing some trichocereus cacti. Which one would you recommend... pachonoi, peruvian, or bridgessi? Also, do you think it would be best if I just bought a cutting and went from there? Or should I just start with seeds?

I live in Northern California, so the weather will be in the low 90s to low 100s (or at most 110 degrees F). The weather starts cooling down to around 70 around October, and then reaches the 40s-60s during November and through to Spring. When would be the most ideal time to start growing?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Why don't u get one of each :greenthumb:

Now is the time, we are currently amidst the growing season. Cacti go dormant in the colder months

Buy some cuttings

A selection of cuttings for getting going this season, and seeds for a winter project, ready for when your cacti go dormant and you get itchy for more greenthumbery, because your addiction will be starting to climb by then! :yesnod: :awesome:

I would suggest trichocereus peruvianus. Dont accidentally buy a cutting of cereus peruvianus, they look somewhat similar.

In my experience peruvian is a little more tolerant to over-watering, frost, heat, sun-burn, and physical damage.

Seeds are a bad idea if you are new to gardening. Cactus are notoriously difficult germinators and notoriously easy propagators.

Thanks for the heads up! I will look for some cuttings at today's farmer's market. They usually have San Pedro already planted in a pot for sale, but I'm not sure about the peruvians.

Anyone recommend a good place online to buy cuttings? Should the cutting be about a foot?

Yeah i wouldnt try to root it. Ive heard of guys doing 1cm or more but in my opinion 15cm or 6" and longer is best. Tip cuttings are also way better than mid cuttings.

You can start san pedro cacti from seed. These little fuckers don't need anything but water and sun.

It's just impossible to kill them. Mix 1-2mm sand with any terreau like 50/50. Full soak your soil and drain it. Put the seeds on the surface, spray water and put the whole thing in a mini greenhouse in a lighted but shady spot. Forget this one or two month, then take them out of the humidity and water when the soil dries.
Put them gradually in full sun once you take them out of the green house.

What people will tell you to use and that you don't need (for san pedro) :

-Sterilizing soil
-Using fungicides
-heating mats

On the subject of using sterile soil, i actually was advised to inoculate my seedling mix with the microbes from any established echinopsis species.

Seems to work like a charm. No heat mat but i did use a humidity dome (plastic wrap) and some sulfur dust.

Even without experience people get at least one seedling out of a pack of seeds. They just arent as easy as germinating say, watermelon.

This is probably a more appropriate piece of advice about cacti seedling germination. You shouldn't be turned off from trying seeds at all. They aren't hard, really. Just follow advice and write-ups from here on the site and you will at least get something I would imagine. Everybody has a first time growing cacti from seed.

But like Toadstool said, they just aren't the easiest thing ever to start from seed. My reccommendation would be to try both out. Get yourself some cuttings or even a rooted plant so you can have the satisfaction of watching some good growth happening, but at the same time, you can mess around with seeds too. That is an entirely different satisfaction in itself knowing you started something from seed and watching it grow from nothing.

Dive on in, man. Get your feet wet. Just remember, sometimes things don't always work out - things die sometimes. But it's the failures we all learn from, so don't be scared to fail.

I have access to 2 foot Peruvian Torchs somewhere in town for around $25-$30... should I aim for something smaller? Perhaps I'll get one of their smaller San Pedros and then ordering a cutting of Peruvian Torch from somewhere online...?

2 foot peruvian torch for 25-30usd seems fair price... I'd buy that one (+smaller pach) and make a cutting myself, instead of ordering a cutting online.

I'd buy that two footer in a heartbeat, that is a great price for one that big.  You won't find anything online even close to that price for that big.  I agree with you on buying local since you live in the right climate. I think you'll find better prices and you can inspect what you're buying in person.  I have to buy almost all of mine online because almost no one around here carries anything other than the smaller globular varieties.

I will definitely grab that 2 footer and a smaller San Pedro!

Also, I just order some Kratom and with my order I received a free un-rooted 6 inch cutting of an euphorbia ingens cactus... Are these particular cacti hard to grow? They seem to get pretty huge!

I just had to google it to see what it was... damn that thing is crazy, never seen such a thing before.  It's half tree, half cactus!

Well after a lil bit of research it seems that cacti tree plant thing produces a poisonous sap, and I have a dog, so I;m not sure it would be wise to grow it in my backyard...
