Looks and sounds like Leccinum insigne.

Be very cautious about eating Leccinums.

They are definitely all poisonous if even slightly undercooked.

We also seem to have an undescribed species out there that is still poisonous even if cooked. It has an orange cap and grows under aspen.

If you still want to eat Leccinum, cut the fresh mushroom in half vertically and save half uncooked in the refrigerator. Go ahead and enjoy the other half. If you get sick, WE WANT THE OTHER HALF. If this happens, contact me and we will make arrangements so I can get the other half for the herbarium so that it can be properly studied.

The reason we can't identify the culprit in the poisonings is that the victims have always eaten all of them.

Happy mushrooming!

The fact that they bruised deep black kinda kept me from eating them. They're drying now. Gotta find someone who knows the variety well from the area.
