Guitar Gods
    #21884257 - 07/01/15 06:38 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Who are your favorites?

I just discovered Marty Friedman, I am not big on metal anymore but man does he shred! Such nice harmonies too :crazy2: :drooling:

Been making my way through this album of his:

Marty Friedman - Dragon's Kiss (full album)

Killer stuff...

Who are some other "guitar gods"?

Guthrie Govan is definitely a great one.

Takashi Masuzaki is another one:

Are You Gonna Win? / Dimension

That is the group he is in.

Nick Johnston also comes to mind:

Very nice acoustic song but he kills it on electric too...

The guitarist from The Brew is pretty damn good too, still pretty young as well so before too long he will probably be a god.

Brendan Smalls has some great stuff too:

Dethklok The Duel

Always loved the harmonies in this song, pretty killer shreddage. Intense video too, the part they turn British always gets me

Don't worry about me, I've got all that I need. And I'm singing my song to the sky

You know how it feels, With the breeze of the sun in your eyes. Not minding that time's passing by

I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me

I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

Are you aware of Tommy Emmanuel ml420?
That's the best player I'm aware of. As far as shredding goes malmsteen or Paul Gilbert are probably the best.

I was going to post Tommy Emmanuel too. I've seen him live, it was pretty awesome. That guy is hands down one of the best players in the world.

I like the more traditional stuff. Jerry Garcia, Tony Rice, Larry Keel, etc. To me a guitar god isn't one who plays fast, but rather can improvise on the fly and put a killer live show.

Joe Satriani
John Petrucci
Tosin Abasi
Buckethead
Plini

Did I mention BUCKETHEAD!?!?  That guy is extremely underrated.  He's put out over 50 albums... in the last 6 months alone!!!  I can't even keep up with the total number of albums he's made. It's over 150 now.

I completely agree with that. But I do still think technical skills play a big role. I am not a fan of players like Vai or Satriani becouse they take shredding too far and I feel like they lose to much soul in the process. All my favorite guitarists have a balance of creativity, technical skill, and all the jazz. Definitely is no one thing that makes some an amazing guitarist.

I will have to check out some of these names I have not heard.

Been meaning to get into buckethead more, I have listened to some of his stuff and really dig it, especially the stuff that isn't as metal as some of it gets.

I am still finishing that Friedman album which I put on hold and damn, some tasty licks and harmonies  Easily some of the tastiest I have heard...

I saw Buckethead years ago on LSD at my first music festival, all the way back in 2006. It was a killer show. But yeah, technical proficiency is definitely a part of it.

Let me guess, you've only heard a couple songs by Joe Satriani? He doesn't just shred.

Now, Yngwie Malmsteen is just pointless shredding.

For Tommy Emmanuel, look into his Beatles medleys! He can play the lead, rhythm, and drums for multiple songs all at the same time on one guitar.

I have heard my fare share of satriani, I liked that song more than most but I still am not a fan really  He is good at guitar no doubt but I would rather listen to someone less technical and more soulful like Gilmour or someone. Same goes for Vai. Not big on Malmsteen either. They all just come across as very over the top too me, especially vai n malmsteen

Hendrix is amazing, much soul and technical skills on top of the creativity. Too bad many of the best musicians live hard and die young

ZomeD, that link is not working for me. Just a heads up.

These guys are both gods no doubt:

I'm a fan of those guys. I listened to their music a lot when I was younger. Wasn't saying they are bad or anything, but I do prefer a different sound these days. Never saw any of those bands live though.
