Threads being marked as read, when I haven't clicked them

Hi, hope you've been well.
So I've encountered a problem where threads which have the unread highlight on them will after multiple browses of the ' my threads ' list turn to darkened read, which is really frustrating!
Because I cycle through the new replies in the my threads page and I'll get halfway through and the replies all just go dark as read and I lose all the new replies and don't know which threads to click!
Sometimes I'll be busy and won't have time to view or reply to a particular thread all will leave it marked as unread as a reminder to later post, and then it'll auto go to darkened read at some stage and I'll lose track of it and the conversation.
Is there anyway to fix this?? To ensure all unread threads stay highlighted as such untill they are clicked?
Please and thankyou

This is common, and it's perfectly normal. In fact, if you search this forum you'll find a ton of posts about it. There's no way to fix it. Which posts you have/haven't read are stored locally on your computer, and shit can go wrong, and then this happens.

Dang it. Cos I post in a tonne of different threads and can't remember which thread things are from or where to reply etc. Once it goes dark it's just washed into a sea of dead threads!

It's.. perfectly normal that something can't be fixed? That's.. weird. I find it pretty annoying as well. Is the forum infrastructure so bad that it literally cannot be fixed because the framework shits the bed or what? I'm assuming we're talking about the information being stored in cookies when you say "locally", but what makes that any different than if it were stored server side? Inevitable file corruption caused by the constant updating? I thought we lived in the goddamn future. I need some answers.

This still happens to me all the time.
Super annoying since I have not been able to be on nearly as frequently as I used to. Especially with big threads, I have no idea where it even left off at.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Is it all server end? And any way to make it be synced with my phone? That never has worked correctly either, and I'm not sure why...
Thanks.
edit:

Could this be the issue? I just changed it to 0, but it was set at 60. I assume this was the default because I don't think I would have changed it. Accidentally mouse hovers over a thread title under my threads list? Then it marks it as read? I assume that is what it means. Perhaps this is what is happening to some of us?
