looks good,
my personal reccomendations to everyone are at least 12 inches from any surface. so I would raise it a bit more and pull it away from the wall. 6 inches will suffice.
I like to use 4-6 inches of perlite and would go for the 6" but I do know the tek's all say 3-5
ditch the hygrometer it's going to give you false 90+ readings all the time. you actually want the SGFC humidity to fluctuate way more than that and it does. The humidity only needs to be in the upper 90s the few fractions of an inch from the surface of the cake. the micro climate provided by the dunk and roll. the actuall air in the SGFC can vary in humidity wildly throught the day
don't mist 3-4 times a day mist only as much as needed be it 1 time some days or 5 the next.
nice work!

Not to get off topic right off the bat but when I mist I'm thinking about when it rains in the tropics. When it rains it's fuckin raining. So it's not just gonna get it a little wet. I've been soaking the cakes pretty much everytime I mist and I've gotten good results.

if you pick it up and it's super dense and mushy it's over saturated and you'll get stunted growth you can over hydrate a cake.
dig up some earth the next time you find a mushroom growing not from tree roots
you'll notice the colonization is quite a lot different the wait the soil drains and the way the mycelium is networked out and not chocked full of spongey vermiculite is very different than the moisture balance happening in a cake.

Thanks, but how do I know the humidity is in the upper 90s if the hygrometers are bad above 90%?

bodhisatta, thanks man, you answered a few of my questions in this thread.
Magic Mike, I built the EXACT same chamber and I must say, nice drill work sir. Much more uniform than my own.
My experience with the SGFC, the first time I set one up I spent so much time trying to chase that 90% RH reading on my hydrometers (analog and digital) but I didn't start seeing results until I stopped messing with it every five minutes and just let it do its thing. I was getting fruits with typical readings of 70-85% humidity.
Also I was digging through some archives and found a post where RR explained that if you keep you meter against the wall like that, the fresh air will throw it off. I also didn't dunk and roll before and everything I've read since then suggests that this is a very important step. The vermiculite retains the moisture even though your meter may read less.
Think of your hydrometer as more of a guide than biblical word. You do all the steps as suggested and the stuff should basically take care of itself.
Did you do a dunk and roll on your cakes, because I'm not seeing vermiculite on them.
(As always PLEASE correct any misinformation I'm spouting and we all learn more =D )

Thanks! That's the first compliment I got on the hobby.
I've actually had my digital and analog hygrometer agreeing within about 1% of each other. I never considered the fresh air throwing off the humidity but that's a great point. I may figure out a way to put them in the center or stop obsessing over them.
I did do the dunk and roll its just hard to tell in the pic. Probably because the fluffy myc growth since birthing. Still no pins. 2 of the cakes on the left have been in there for 9 days and the one on the right for 2. So I'm just (im)patiently waiting for those first pins

Do you feel that I have the light in the correct position?

Don't quote me on this but I think you should be fine as long as the light reaches them. Last time I was hanging out here there was a lot of debate about what light actually does for fungus and I haven't taken the time to look further into it. Like I said, I got the exact same tub and I'm just hanging a 5000k Cool CFL about a foot over the lid. I just birthed today so we'll know if I'm an abject failure in a few days.
How much is the bulb influencing temperature fluctuation?
