Cacti ID request... please&thankyou.

This cactus has been growing at my mother's house for at least 20 years now. Growing up, I never once considered that it might contain any sort of hallucinogen.
Is this of the trichocereus species, and does it contain any actives? Flower buds are smooth and not furry. Fruits are a light reddish hue, which split open to reveal white insides with small black seeds. Not unlike that of the dragon fruit plant.
(sorry for the sub-par picture quality)

My guess is cereus... Wait for someone who actually knows what they are talking about chimes in though before you take my guess as word.

This is a very pertinent observation: Trichocereus got its name from the fact that the floral tubes are hairy (trichos means "hair" in greek).

They are also apparently edible and very tasty. Oh, and those black seeds can be germinated to obtain lots of nice stocks for grafting Trichocereus or Lophophora. All things considered, that's a very good catch.

I've never sampled one I would describe as tasty unfortunately. At best they've been like a bland mealy kiwi or Hylocereus fruit.

Thanks for the informative reply! Next time, I'll know what to watch out for.
Any other characteristics that distinguish Trichocereus from other cereus species?
In truth, the fruits don't look that appealing. I think I'll just stick to the fruits I get at the farmer's market.

At the most basic level - look for something like this specimen, except with ribs that are much fatter instead of flatter.

Have you tried many different peruvian apples? I wonder if you just had a bland variety? I mean every other fruit has a hundred varieties with a wide range of flavor differences so I wonder if it's the same case with cereus fruits.

They were consistently bland eh? Ah well, maybe the people who call the fruit delicious just have different taste buds, or they are using advertising language to sell more cacti lol.

I think a lot of confusion comes from the fact that multiple things are called pitaya. This is a thread about the real pitaya.
Hylocereus and Stenocereus are the only two ones I know that are specifically cultivated for their fruit. Hylocereus is okay. Stenocereus is supposed to be really good, but I couldn't tell you because they are not available outside of their native region so I haven't tried one.

Hylocereus aka dragon fruit was quite common when I was working in Hawai'i, but now that you mention it the taste is barely there at all, I guess it kind of is bland but it's certainly a pretty fruit.
