Question about my cakes?
    #21882771 - 07/01/15 12:44 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Hello shroomery, I've been dwelling in your forum for a good some years now and have just recently for the first time joined and started my own little mycology collection.

I inoculated (6) 1-Pint sized jars about one month ago, and this is what they look like so far. I have one jar in question though, and that would be the jar in the first three pictures. It appears as though the cake has shrunk and the mycellium is only growing on part of the BRF/VERM substrate? The rest of the cakes are doing great and appear to be very healthy but this one is just falling behind.

Been a while since I've touched a pf cake, but I believe shrinking is normal. The mycelium is eating the rice flour after all.

Spores create random genetics, so your slow jar is likely just a slower growing set of genes. I don't think there's much you can do for a slow jar other than be patient

1. Remove all foil.....it was only there for sterilization, after that it comes and remains off.

2. Never flip cakes that have not yet stalled......now that they are flipped, just leave them....flipping them back will only bring contams from the dry verm layer down the sides of the cake.

3. They all look way too wet...take better pics of each jar after foil is removed.

Wouldn't removing the foil risk contams because the jars would then be exposed to more fresh air? The cakes had stopped making progress before I flipped them, after I flipped them they took of, the 3 that aren't flipped are almost completely colonized.

These are some pictures I had taken the other day, you might be able to see them better here without me having to remove the foil.

No, the dry verm layer does that......if the foil remains on the jars and no fresh air can hit the verm, it can become moist and useless....and then u will get contams.....

The foil filters nothing, the DRY verm filters everything.

Okay, I'll remove the foil. Based on these pictures though does it seem as though I should begin the consolidation period for a couple of those jars? As for the the jar I had questions about the layer of BRF/VERM the mycellium had taken over is a separate chunk from the rest of the BRF/VERM it seems as though it's two separate pieces, the jar had a contam a couple weeks ago but was fought off by the mycellium I'm wondering if I should just start fruiting that cake.

I had the same issue when I used full pint jars.. Almost the exact same situation, after about a month they stalled out. Flipping them did the trick, you just gotta leave them now. I'm  purely speculating but I think it has to do with the amount of moisture in the jars. The myc seems to pull up the moisture from the bottom and kinda pull apart. All in all it took me around 2 months for full colonization and I lost a bit to contaminates. Pints just seem to take too long to fully colonize and the longer it takes the more opportunity for contaminates to take hold.

I live in an area where the wide-mouth half pints are uncommon to find in store, but you can get half pint jelly jars which, while still tall, should colonize faster than full pints.

I finally got a hold of some wide mouth half pints and the difference is incredible. About 2 weeks to full colony. If you can get some they are worth every penny of $12.

Don't give up on them yet.

The other five cakes are all doing phenomenal but the last cake seems to be having it's issues, I wont be around to fruit the last one if it does take a whole nother month so I'm curious if I should just begin the SGFC process now for the one jar and add the rest in as they consolidate thank-you so much for your responses and have a good day

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19279962#19279962

that should help.

foil off after sterilization, if you made proper PF(BRF) TEK lids with 4 holes and a dry verm layer.

you shouldn't have to flip even the tall half pints(wrong size you want 90mm lids not the 70mm lids) if you have to flip you made the mix wrong and loaded it wrong or have an infection or have shit genetics. in any case I would skip that cake and just make more anyway.
