HELP- Substrate for King Oyster and Agaricus LC
    #21882712 - 07/01/15 12:20 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Hello all

I have made some liquid cultures.

A couple Agaricus bisporus and a couple Pleurotus eryngii.

The mycelium is looking nice and healthy but I don't know what to inoculate?

Keep in mind I don't have a sterile room.

Agaricus bisporus - Inoculate sterile H/Poo Jars or grain jars ? then spawn to pasteurized compost?

Or inoculate sterile compost jars?

Or just inoculate pasteurized compost directly?

Add a Gypsum casing layer?

Pleurotus eryngii - Fruit "In Vitro" on inoculated Sawdust and bran? (Since no clean room)

Also what's the deal on Lime and Gypsum, Which is better and which of these mushrooms require some in their food?

Sorry for the questions

Thanks

never grown kings before. But i would definitely say WBS to start the growth on for spawn. From my experiences with LC its not the best way to start a culture. It can be contaminated without you knowing. Grain or even better agar gives more telltale signs for contaminated growth than LC. For example im currently battling a yeast contaminated LC that the LC looks healthy but grows like shit on WBS and you can smell the fermentation.

You should use 5% gypsum in your WBS and bulk substrate, helps with colonization. Lime is for balancing the PH but not needed especially at entry level. It can also be used as a cold water bath for alkaline pasteurization.  I haven't cased in years but i see no reason why not to add gypsum. Many put lime in there casing to balance the PH, especially with a acidic casing layer like peat, but its not completely necessary. If you buy pre mixed potting soil for casing the PH is usually already balanced and it's mostly just pet moss and mulch anyways.

Hope that helped, and hopefully someone with experience with this variety can chime in.

Thanks a lot!

The thing about grain spawn for King Oysters (I think) is that the grain spawn must then be spawned (in a sterile room) to a woody bulk substrate. Also its a slow colonizer hence having to be especially sterile, So most home grows I've seen around the web are "in vitro" just inoculating a sterile jar with wood chips, bran and some gypsum and fruiting directly once colonized. Dunno

And Agaricus I think inoculating Compost and H/poo jars then dumping them out in a tub and adding some sort of casing layer.

Really don't know. Need help

We grow kings on sterilised hardwood sawdust supplemented to 40% with wheat bran and 5% gypsum, 60% water... sorry if this is no help! I have heard things about kings on pasteurised straw but nothing conclusive..

Orgasmed  :dawerp: , What are you using for your spawn and are you spawning to pasteurized straw in a clean room?

Straw is pasteurized and unsupplemented. Inoculated with homemade organic wheat spawn - outside in open air.

What kind of colonization times are we talking about for the King?

Sorry guys, but I don't have definite answers to those questions. These grows were all from this winter and I've since stopped growing kings with the higher summer temps. and at that point I got a bit lazy on my note taking...:stoned:

The first picture is of a large king/straw column, the other two pictures are large standard sized filter patch bags. If I remember correctly the filter patch bags yield slighly over a pound - first flush. Later flushes were hit and miss with yielding much fruits. I think it was mostly from having the tops fully open allowing the sub to dry out to much and them loosing a lot of water from the first fruitings. Casing after the first flush probably would have helped the problem but I hate to use casings - just an extra step and its messy at harvest time.

The straw columns where what I really banked on and I actually got a few really good flushes per log before tossing them. The trick was experimenting with hole size to get great flushes while trying to avoid pinning inside the bags.

My spawn rates for the filter patch bags were probably somewhere around 2 quart jars per bag.

The columns were spawned somewhere around 2 half gallon jars per 2 feet of log. My log size ranged from 2-5 feet, averaging about 4 feet tall.

As is typical with kings they colonized a bit longer then regular oysters. Usually pinning between 3-4 weeks after they were inoculated.

Overall, I was really pleased with the kings grown on straw in columns and will continue experimenting with this method later this fall and winter during cooler temps. I'd like to colonize a 2 footer, then slice it in half lengthwise, lay them on their sides and case the exposed cut surface to help catch all the mushrooms I was loosing to underbag pinning.

:sunny:
