Essentially some issues were raised about possible license issues, the possibility of backdoors, or bugs that would allow inappropriate access. There was a detailed code audit that was recently completed.
Veracrypt is a fork of the TrueCrypt code that is being actively developed with those issues in mind.

Does that mean my encrypted files aren't safe?

The audit didn't find any really serious issues in terms of security. You can keep on using TrueCrypt if you would like (and it will be reasonably safe) but you're better off finding a new solution in the long run. VeraCrypt might be a good start since it fixed the bugs found during the TrueCrypy audit.

TrueCrypt version 7.1a was audited, and you can keep using it for as long as it works for you. It will get out-dated eventually, though. The forks may have fixed the minor flaws that the audit turned up, but they're also adding features. New code can lead to new vulnerabilities, so I'd honestly stay put until you need some new feature. At that point, the community may have rallied around the successor.

I wasn't aware of that. Learn something, or many things, every day.

Necrobump due to new information.
It's time to walk-not-run away from truecrypt.
It's now known that a privilege escalation attack exists against the kernel driver for all versions of truecrypt (including the forks at the time of disclosure). This means that if something nasty gets into your system, it can use truecrypt to grant itself administrator privileges. This is a common kind of issue in all kinds of software (Microsoft patches them every month). This does not mean that your truecrypt containers can be cracked. It means that malware can use truecrypt to gain a foothold in your system and then burrow in deeply.
It's now time to move to an actively supported fork, because the original truecrypt will remain vulnerable forever.

If anything I would use LUKS. Only works if you run a linux kernel of course. I personally have no need to encrypt my drive so I use nothing.

By that response I know you have absolutely no idea what you're doing, and probably shouldn't be trying this... I disclaim responsibility XD
Here you go https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EncryptedFilesystem
I've done it with arch as well and I find their overall system easier.
